So far, i've started a plot (i've edited it in) that starts with the nomads. It doesn't have to end with the nomads or even another race. Our greatest threat could be ourselves.

Storyline Suggestion
Here you can find anything related to the Open Source, Freelancer like game project Openlancer.
However, Dodge has a point in that their empire was extremely vast. There is probably no sentient life forms in the area of their empire, at least the likelihood is much lower.

I like the intro you've written Blackhole, its a great starting point.
We gotta think about Dan Korban more though. He's the main character. Is he like Trent? Maybe a bit more like King? Or even (God forbid) Tobias??!!
What is his job? Why is he on this colony ship? Is he adventurous? Or running from something?
If you think about it, Trent is a very well defined character. We have to make Korban feel like more than 'Some Guy'.

@Blackhole,
You're right about "ourselves" being a threat. As you can see in Freelancer that the 5 colonial houses are either allied or at odds. For that matter there is much political subterfuge between lawful and unlawful factions. The part of the programming that handles the reputation slider is to say the least.....very interesting. For example, if a pilot whips up on say, the Corsairs exclusively... the Hogosha end up hating you worse than the corsairs even though you never fired a shot at the Hogosha.
Anyway, I've been attempting to keep up with the posts on this project. I understand that you're a young man of 15 years. I am very impressed and want to convey this encouragement to you. Keep it simple as possible and stick to your story line as close as possible. You're getting alot of fabulous and fantasic (some impossible) ideas thrown at you in a short time. It can get overwhelming but dont give up.
A famous aircraft designer of "SKUNKWORKS" once said, "...KISS...keep it simple and stupid". (We got the Stealth Bomber, U-2 and SR-71 out of it).
Keep your horizons broad, and your vision focused.
Just because alot of people want something in your project doesnt mean you have to include it. Like you said, if they can program...then lend a hand. Keep in mind there is way too many who really dont know what they're asking of you. That they are asking kids fancies and know nothing of the real meat of the machine that drives the game.

Couple of points...
@Dodge- it would seem that the Nomads only went after those that disturbed the active Dom 'Kovash artifacts, so there could very well be some races that never have found out about them.
@ Rankor - Agreed, especially about utilizing the KISS principle in the development. your logic for the storyline holds together well, also. We still, however , need our villian- be it race, faction, or individual. And, as a question, why 20 years?

I think Dodge's story idea's pretty good. i like the fact that the colonies are isolated. and things have started new. although, leaving in sleeperships has been done. the idea of finding a way home does have alot of potential. for one, it could easily be an humans only type of storyline.
another thing, the game will be very different from FL and this storyline allows fr a fresh start on, not just techology, but government structure and naming. at the same time it allows a chance to throw in some traces of FL.
Plus, the climax of the story could lead to Sol instead of the sirus sector. allowing for expansion on the story later.
Mess With the Best, Die like the Rest.

my last post made me think of something: what if they return to sol? what if they find it deserted? what if earth was destroyed? they turn mars into a livable planet and colonize sarrounding systems. the plot could include trying to find out what happened to sol and how earth got destroyed?
This could also be a story part of a later addition or something, i dunno.

Hoooly **** i can just imagine you coming through the jumphole... finding a decimated Sol system
I could compose music for that too
And yes, i like dodge's story as well (its what i used as a base for my intro). I threw in the nomads so that we could have a backup enemy. I personally am in favor of the colonies trying to destroy themselves from the inside-out. As for making him more than "A Guy", here is a proposed personality:
Name: Dan Julian Korban
Faction: Justician (Instead of liberty, we have Justicia)
Background: Dan was born on pittsburg and worked in the mines as a child. His father was a drunk, and he never had a mother. He grew up wishing to live this place and take to the skies, to space! Finally he was able to, 3 days before the destruction of the Donau. He was one of the rhino's that was flying past that day and ran away at full speed. After the events of those months he was starting to despise the Sirius Sector. A month later he found out his father had died.
Not really caring too much about his fathers death, he met a nice woman in an equipment shop (MUST EVERYONE MEET IN A BAR?!?! i say: NO! ) and they began to date. A few weeks later he saw the news about the colonization effort, and following his and his fiance's dreams, they signed up to start a new life, a peaceful life... Little did he know just how violant it was destined to be... *cue ominous music*
Hobbies: Although he is a trader at heart, he also enjoys a little dogfighting here and there. He usually writes in his journal during long patrols or trade runs to stave off the loneliness of space. He took lessons in playing the piano for a few months, but never really caught on.
Fears: He does not like pirates and would never want to become one. Too dangerous and his experiences as a trader with them have been anything but pleasent. He wants to be nice and safe within civilized terratory. (what he was thinking when he went on that ship, i do not know)
Habits: He gets paranoid when he's scared. Paranoid and suspicious of anyone.
Personality: He is a joking, mostly uncaring young man of the age of 26. He does not think of himself as the adventuring type, but deep down he has a raging longing for some kind of adventure. He usually keeps out of trouble and does not bid well to wrongdoers. He is not too outgoing, but he'll fit right in if you manage to get him into a party. He does not care too much for money, but he makes sure he has a decent amount.
Alright, thats just a sample, feel free to suggest revisions, additions, or completely rewrite him into another character.
EDIT: Alternate house names: Justicia, Komaga (yes, thats a japanese mountain), Dubunni (i THINK thats french for... something...), and Burtmond.
Those suck, but i had to do research

it would be 0 unless they had hyper drive capability and give me a few days or so on this and ill get a story made. but first let me think on how i can combine all of this into one storie...also why couldnt we make a bigger map of the system? say 1,000,000 ly in size? make the map able to zoom into sections and or have it were we could set it on a zoom to stay as we traveled around
blackhole you got xfire, aol or yahoo?

I like the Personal file you wrote Blackhole. But lets not forget the "Han Solo" of the story...
Name: Wyat *Ike* Lee
Born on Buffalo base in New York, Wyat was a roughnek by heart. His dad was an ex-cattle rancher on Texas, and his mom was a Rhineland immegrant with her perants. Although his dad was a criminal, he made sure his son would never have to live that kind of a life. He tought his boy respect and pride in ones heritage. Wyat was also tought good religious values, but didn't like the idea of an all powerfull being. But even with that he is still searching for answers about the universe, including those that can't be solved by science. Wyat met Korba on Pittsburgh before Korban married, and they were friends from day one.
Hobbies: Girls, Beer, ships, Guns, a good fight, and an odd obsession with History...
Fears: Spiders... can't stand 'em...
Habbits: Wont go anywhere without his luck hat. Although 1 year younger then Korban, he still calls Korban "Kid".
Personality: Usualy friendly, but has a short temper. He is the more philisophical of the 2. His conflictions between his faith and science really bug Korban. Will fall for a hot girl without thinking, this can lead to trouble...
Howzat? lol
