Storyline Suggestion

Here you can find anything related to the Open Source, Freelancer like game project Openlancer.

Well, hey. If you need a general plot or storyline and a universe to put it in, it just dawned on me that I made an online forum-RPG game a while ago that was similar to Freelancer in setup, but had all new systems, factions, nationalities, bases, stuff like that. It's all planned out with a map, base list, nationalities, etc. The game didn't go too far, but all the stuff is still on the website here.

Just thought I'd throw this in. Check it out if you're interested.

ok heres some random ideas.

How about the coalition is in the new sector but, just like with the alliance, Memories and grudges of the war are long forgotten. even tho tension exists, both sides try to coexist. The new Sector isnt home for the coalition group either, just like the alliance, they have discovered it recently and sent colonies. and they have resided in it for not much longer than the alliance. the colalition may not nessisarily be the problem.
An alien race is a possable thret but thats already been done in a little game called Freelancer.

One aspect of freelancer is the familiarity of the location names. we should carry that over to openlancer. you would atomaticly know around where a system is on the nav map just by hearing te name. (I.E. you hear the name New tokyo and you know its kursari) the same would be with the names of ships and weapons.

these are just a few thoughts i have on the setting for the story.

*Bang* AUSSIE HOUSE!

Maybe we should have Dan Korban (this Korban name could be a problem though, ever heard of Korban Dallas?) do a few missions for the government, then he starts being hunted because he 'learnt too much.' From then on, we could have him constantly trying to stay one step ahead, and eventually draw out some kind of massive conspiracy that he eventually foils so he won't be hunted anymore.

Any comments on this?

@ Hawk of Prey-
Sounds kind of like the way FL moves- Trent takes on a couple of jobs, gaining more info, then suddenly has TOO much info for his own good... see what I mean? No disrespect intended...And who IS Korban Dallas? can't say I've heard of him.

Thought of this over the first cup of (diesel grade) coffee- After the 5 sleeper ships leave the Sol system, many years follow with those who stayed behind waging insurgent operations all over the system. Finally, realizing that there is no real way to loosen the coalition's grip on the home system, the remnants, led by what is left of the Australian federation( there ya go Robbio!) band together to build another ship or ships and leave Sol to the nasties. This hacks the coalition off something horrible, and they decide that they will pursue. Due to the internecine strife and backstabbing amongst the coalition, the Remnants- for lack of a better name - have time to find their own systems, colonize, etc, and by the time the coalition ship shows up- for some reason, it takes them MUCH longer- they are firmly established and the coalition forces are forced to occupy less desirable areas of the region. Time passes, and the Coalts have grown stronger, found their own planets and resources, and are now trying to destroy the Remnants. From their Capitol on New Brisbane the Remnants launch exploration ships, some of which have orders to try and find a route that will eventually lead to the other houses in Sirius. The Coalts learn of this secondary effort and will stop at nothing to prevent contact, pursuing the explorer ships and destroying them where, when, and how they can. This has gone on for quite a while, with each side refining and developing their technological abilities, and eventually, an Explorer ship breaks through into a new region that shows some signs of human habitation.

By the time these events come to pass, it is four years after the Nomad war, and several colonization and exploration ships have left the Sirius sector to extend human presence into other areas of the galaxy....

Its who Bruce Willis plays in The Fifth Element

It doesnt matter, they cant copyright a name . And we're only using half the name anyway >.<

Edit: That sounds great Fred!

A basic story line evolves around this:
It has be 20 years since the nomads were defeated at Dyson City. Edison Trent and Jun'ko Zane have gone on about their buisness as usual. Edison eventually found the long lost son of Don Trofello and returned him to Planet Malta to reap the 3 million credit reward and earning him a place in the Outcasts anals of history. Juni on the other hand continued her career in the LSF, eventually achieving the rank of Vice Admiral of Intelligence. Both of them now have children whose names are Lance and Miko.
Tobias (Edisons' mentor and adoptive parent) has long since retired and is now living in on a new terraformed planet in the Cambridge System.
Orillion has dissappeard through the Hypergate at Dyson City. Some say in a fit of madness on a quest to follow the nomads to other unknown and undiscovered systems. He left Colonel Hess in charge of the Order.
Colonel King was killed in action while leading a routine patrol in the badlands when he was ambushed by Outcasts.
Shogun Hakkira was assasinated by factionists of the Golden Crysanthemums who are now in control of the Kusari Shogunate.
President Jacobi served 2 more terms as leader of Liberty and presently leads a quite life somewhere in the Texas system. Rumor suggests Planet Chisos was terraformed for her personal use.
During the 20 years that have passed, new systems have been discovered and colonized. Old weapons technologies have long been discarded in favor of the nomad weapons. New advances in jump technology have been discovered.

New and previously unknown races of beings have also been discovered. Three of which are called, The Entu, The Uhmrah and The Drex. During that span of years the nomads have gained control of the race known as The Drex and developed a plan to retake Sirius with the most sinister purpose in their collective mind. The total elimination of all mankind. Now only the Entu and the Uhmrah stand in their way and hold the key to our survival and our existance.

This is where Lance and Miko come into the picture. Both are in their 20's and continuing in the traditions of their respective parents. Lance is a freelancer and Miko is a Leutenant in the LSF.

Quite a bit of stuff in there we could use, but I dont like the idea of new races. I think this should be kept strictly human, especially if we are going to include coalitionists

The year is 4,397 A.S. by the old calendar… over 3,000 years ago, we lived in a place called Sirius. We lived in peace, as brothers, as friends. In the year 920 A.S. our ancestors found a jump gate leading to another corner of the universe. The gate was controlled by a race known as the Nomads whom we had defeated in a war only 100 years earlier. The gate led to a rich new part of the universe that was named Araan, after the man who discovered the gate. And so our ancestors loaded great ships, full of people and food and supplies for the colonization of Araan. They loaded 50 sleeper ships, and over 200 escorts. They left Sirius, they left their families, and friends. And they set forth for their new home. And as they entered Araan, they received their last message from Sirius, “Did you make it?” And as they prepared to respond, the gate exploded. The shock wave destroyed nearly half of the ships that had come through. They were trapped. Cut off from their home, our home. In a dangerous and hostile environment. But the luck of the colonists got worse, the destruction of the gate also destroyed the only planet in the system. In desperation, the colony ships set off in different directions, looking, hoping for a new home. Of the 26 sleeper ships that survived, only 7 found suitable worlds. Of the 98 escorts, only 2 Liberty Dreadnoughts survived. And so we have spent the last 3,000 years in Araan. We have discovered new and exciting worlds. We have found ancient relics of races long past. We have grown to cover hundreds of systems, and are still growing. From our seed, many empires have risen and fallen. But with all of our accomplishments, we still want one thing above all ells. To go home.

As you know, the nomads were only defeated. They were not destroyed. Orllion had proposed for Trent to be the eyes and ears of the Order in Liberty. The story never really ended there. It was left wide open.
As for other races, the nomads still exist and we cannot eliminate the possiblilty that others exist. For to do so would limit us terribly in this development.
According to previous fictions, (possibly an earlier release of Freelancer) the nomads had destroyed the sun in Sol, effectively killing the human race there. Some massive shock wave had fanned out blasting planets to dust in its path. There would be little left alive in what was Sol....about a thousand years ago. If nothing else, the nomads themselves would be in control of Sol.

That story is ok, what does everyone else think of it? I have so much information to look through, ohhhh my lord....

Rankor has a point with the Nomads, but on the part of other races...

I dont think well find anyother races within 500 years of the end of FL. Why? The Nomads would kill them all. The only reason Humans survived was our exodus caused by the Allience Coalition war. If the Nomads would do that to us, then they would do that to everyone they encounter.

Somemore reasoning: The way I understood the Nomads was that they were created to protect all the Don Kovash territory. Which, based on the map found by Trent and company in FL, must have been at least 40,000 light years in size. Now, if the Sirius systems are only 20,000 light years in size *A reasonable size* and the trip from Earth to the Sirius sector is about 30,000 LY then it is unlikely that anything within 20,000 LY of the Sirius sector has any indiginous life. And if our story is to take place right after FL, then I am 100% cirtian that humanity would not encoumnter any sentiant life other then Nomads.

Based on that, I think the chance of a new alien race is 0.

The vastness of the Dom Kavash empire is indeed represented with the 3D map during the Freelancer story and as you well know it was quite massive. Consider if you will our adventures during the Freelancer story that took us from one side of Sirius to the other. Not withstanding the amount of travel we must have accomplished even after the end of the 13th mission.
I would tend to think that Sirius (a fragment of this galaxy) has somehow been opened up through the use of the Dom Kavash Hypergate system. (consider if you will the advancement we alone have accomplished during the last 20 years during the 20th and begining of the 21st centuries.) I think its very likely that in the future we could possibly tap into a vast resorce such as the Dom Kavash.
Opening up the hypergate system for the purpose of more colonization I think would also possibly open up a different can of worms for us to contend with.
Like I said though, Sirius is only a fragment of this galaxy. The Dom Kavash system represents a larger portion of it, if not the entire galaxy. Then if we go on the "DRAKE Equation", there would be a likelyhood that other sentient life forms could most likely be encountered. Wether they are Friend, Neutral, Foe, primitive or advanced is for us to find out.
--------------
One other thing I think is necessary to point out. The days of the Coalition and Alliance (Cold War) is more or less over. (which is what Starlancer is loosely based upon and where Freelancer picked up after the exodus from Sol)
Instead of "the old enemy" nipping at our heels again and if they havent been totally wiped out (suggesting some survivors), then we would in actuality be allies now. This would be a good thing since during the 1000 years that have passed must have brought about changes since the exodus.
I contend the the statement, "...but we will never forget..." keeps us cautious to who we choose as allies.
