Hi Dart_Striker and welcome to TLR!

Your models look really good for me! In my opinion it is not bad to use parts of existing original FL models like your second model, or to use stock FL textures. I think if you do this, your ships fit quite well into the FL atmosphere and do not seem to come from a different universe.
So, keep modeling like this, I would say. Great work!

its been a while since I showed any of my models, well here is my latest one:

DarkSerpent

continuing along the lines of DarkFighters, and I am rather happy with it, its one of my first ships which has a section that is not made of numerous different parts, but a single part ^^

any suggestions for the texture??

Stars,

Well... there is no short answer to that... there are many many modelling programs out there.. all with their devoted followers. some free, mostly the better ones are not free.. Milkshape... while generally looked down on by many.. supports a wide variety of formats and is inexpensive ($25 USD).. will still do most of the functions of the others and is IMO relatively easy to learn.. It has an excellent basic modelling tutorial included with the help file.. (free) ... and must be used for the final stages of importing a model into Freelancer..It also provides a good grounding in basic low poly modelling before and if you decide to expand your skills..
Without getting into an argument about what's better or worse.. 2 modelling programs that are very well supported are Max and Lightwave.. and while they are not free or even cheap.. it's possible to pick them up for a lot less than full retail by using say Amazon and looking for previous to the current version, or secondhand.. I bought Max 5 for a lot less this way..

For Freelancer the higher poly modellers like Max, Lghtwave etc.. that you can pay big bucks for (with the host of features they have) - need to be used while conscious of the polys they create.. when making curvy smooth models.. as polycount can be an issue as freelancer (and dont jump on me here) was not designed to handle high poly ships..at least not in any quantity..

So.. select your modelling program then go looking for tutorials.. dont know of any real shortcuts.. there is a thread sticked at the top of this forum called "if you find useful stuff" that has links to some tutorials.. it not used much.. maybe I should rename it..

cheese on toast123,

The link does not seem to work.. If you are too LAZY to upload the pictures and link them to the thread.. makes me wonder why we should bother chasing you around the net.. hmmm?

You've inspired me so much that i've decided to try my hand at modeling

you don't have to be shy about showing you models (just look at a few I’ve shown here is a link to my showcase.) This thread is to show your hand at modeling and get opinions/advice on your work, that is an excellent model, I can't really give any suggestions on it I’m just barely a decent modeler myself it's just something I do in my free time between work on the farm and I’d say my job but I’m out of work until late August , anyway don't be afraid to show your work. Of course from the looks of things the "expert" modelers seem to have fled in terror of my last model (come on people it's not that bad)

Well, alpha's models are really good, although I'm quite partial to Kusari ships. I had made one, a Sabre-Dragon combination with smooth edges, but had trashed it because of the insane number of sections. One missile hit would have shot it down.

I guess i'll post some of my work as well. I know a lot of folks either have seen some of my work (my ship packs) or know about them, but these models on the site are new, and are much more efficient than anything i've made before. So heck i guess go check them out and let me know what you guys think. Now, let me remind everyone here...The models are mostly unfinished (when i finish them, they go right into the mod i'm making) and the number of groups gets shaved down to anywhere from 6 to 10 total groups, for texturing. I'm not great with uvmapping a single texture (i'm no good at lining it up right) but i can tell you i use all .dds textures which keeps the size way down. Previously, when i knew jack and squat (two of my BEST friends! LOL) i used .tga - which made .mat files F'in HUGE, but no more. Anyway, to see the models (they are ALL in the Milkshape 3d viewer) you need Internet Explorer with ActiveX allowed. It will prompt you to download the viewer applet, which is safe, and you'll be able to rotate, zoom in and out, and all other kinds of junk with the models.

Thanks for looking! Here comes the LINK

nice work baene, as usual

This is Spicer's Wrath, an experimental battle cruiser built by the ancient spicer race and the nomads at the start of the nomad / spicer alliance. The ship runs off a prototype nomad energy core that taps into the very fabric of space/time...

I'm still trying to get some of the texturing to work right ingame -_-
