Privateer: The Reckoning MOD is ALIVE!

Here you can find news, get help and comment about the Privateer / Wing Commander Total Conversion called ?Privateer: The Reckoning? and accompanying Mods

Post Sun Feb 22, 2004 8:16 am

Are the sound utf files faction specific? If so, make sure the sounds chosen from Privateer are faction specific. Like Retros all have their lines together, as opposed to a mix of Retros & Militia.

Maybe it's an unnecessary warning, you've probably already thought about it. I just wanted to say it in case.

Also, if you want to, here's a link to a tutorial I found that could make FL a little more like Privateer. I don't know or remember if you have done this already or not. **TUTORIAL** - Add scanners and tractor beams to the inventory menu in 5 minutes

I went to WCNews.com and found some more models available for use to anyone from a modeller calling himself WildCat. I don't know what type they are and their skins are certainly out-of-date with current graphics. But if you want to avoid having to do the wire work, maybe these might help whoever skip a few steps in model creation.

Border Worlds Cruiser

TCS Victory

I don't recall what this is, transport or frigate of some kind.

Like I said, the textures are old, but if the frame is good and exportable, it could save someone some work. With hope they're useful.

Wing Commander Saga project supplies all WC3/4 models. In the case of Wildcat I suspect he is using models extracted directly from WC games, which are usable... in case we do not have a better model. Intersecting polies, holes in the models, corrupted textures just to name few problems with them.

Link to the WCSaga website, where you can find a few screenshots of models yet to be converted: http://www.3dap.com/hlp/hosted/wcsaga/

Sir Spectre:
Already done added them:
Scanners, Generators, and Armor Upgrades.
Besides what's in that tutorial, mine are also salvagable items.
(although, they don't show up enough to be a reliable source for upgrading)
I haven't added the tractor beams, yet, because to many missions mandate their use to win, and Privateer only had the one tractor beam.
Once everything's debugged, I do plan on adding more scanners.

Note to everyone who has access to our FTP site:
I'm uploading the latest versions of:
Privateer: The Reckoning v1.07 mod (With splash pages)
A Privateer's Privateer mod (With splash pages)
and
Privateer: The Reckoning Audio mod

More as insurance against my ailing computer than anything else, I could definately use some help doing the debugging run-throughs.

BTW-The splash pages help to identify, and remind you, of which mod you're running.

As a side note:
I have had several medical problems for over a year now.
I still don't know exactly what's wrong, However, it seems to have been narrowed down to Neuropathy, Epilepsy, or Multiple Sclerosis.
I have a doctor's appointment on the 5th, at which time I hope to finally find out what's wrong with me, and what, if any, treatment is available.
I mention this because my anxiety level appears to be increasing as the 5th approaches, and doing the debugging run-throughs have become increasingly difficult for me.
I've diverted my attention to working on creating the Gemini Sector, which, so far, as kept me from climbing the walls.

Take care,
and

Sir Spectre:
Thanx!

I've run through these mods so many times, I can go from clicking on the "New Game" button, to level 4, with a fully loaded heavy fighter, in less than half an hour.
But in the last few days, I'm lucky to get to Pittsburg the 1st time, in under an hour.
I'm just to preoccupied.
Got to keep my mind off it, and not dwell on it.
And it's hard to do.

On the bright side, I've divided the Sirius sector in to mission chunks, and have a general idea how I want to do the same thing to Gemini.
My goal is to not only make the Sirius missions run in Gemini, but to force the player to explore more of Gemini than they do Sirius.
There are several "Meet me on..." Missions.
(Excluding the hub systems of New York, Leeds, and Chingoku.)
Meet me on...
New California...
Cambridge...
Shinkoku Station..
Dublin...
Etc.
Since you aren't guided to those systems by an NPC, I can place the "Meet me on..." systems anywhere I like.
I just have to be very good at programming the "shortest routes."
AND!!!
I have to make sure that the "Nose Ring" systems are aligned so that the NPC can lead you from mission system-to-mission system.
Programming the bases may be my major challenge as I'm trying to keep the mod's size down to a managable level.
(I don't want to issue cd's!)
The micro-systems I've chosen as temporary filler systems will be devoid of bases, but will otherwise be occupied by patrols, and random encounters.
(There's going to be 23 filler systems!)
Anyway, I'm occupied, busy, and being productive.

@warzog
jesus, i hope you get better soon...
we need you, dont even think of getting ill more seriously than you already are
i think sir spectre said the exactly right words, take care of you and watch your health

anyway, i just wanted to add that the "The Next Generation" mod 1.7 has 28,6 mb zipped and without almost any audio...
most of this space is used up by ship files though.

(unzipped these are 86 mb)

Damn, that must be horrid ... well, I hope you're alright. And try to take things easy - if you go through life like you work on the mod, you must be a tornado <G> The last thing you need is to overexert yourself on anything.

As a side note, look familier? It's on its way now!

Somebody asked for a cockpit, don't remember who ;-).
i could do that, but was it meant to replace the HUD or the 3D-Cockpit you see when you change to 1st person view ?
------

Both, if possible ... Personally, I'd like to replace all the blue-ish HUD work with chrome-grey, Quine 4000-style opaque sets - fit more with Privateer.

Post Mon Feb 23, 2004 3:16 am

hm, i disabled the cockpits in freelancer, because they are uglyyyy
a hud change would be really cool, and maybe if someone could make a good cockpit view i would reenable it again

Uploaded two subtle but important (to me, at least) files.

ramscoops.ini does only one thing - but that thing is noticible whenever you hit shift-w. Instead of saying "CRUISE ENGINE CHARGING", the screen now reads "HYDROGEN RAMSCOOPS CLOSING", to reflect that element in Wing Commander.

Also, I felt the music in the bars was too tinny and soft - so off I went on music.ini, tweaking the attentuation to get better volume.

Incidently, I've been fiddling with the camera system and making new cockpit.inis - in turret view (which I use a lot) some of the ships have a rather jarring jump in distance. Some of the cockpits are a bit too low, too - the gunfire flash is overwheming.

Regarding balancing, I've been tweaking it a bit - I still feel the game is a bit too easy - and no, I haven't played any of the campaign missions. Actually, I've been doing free-form MP style - I saved a game immedietly after I finished the campaign in 1.06 and stripped everything out using IONCROSS. Once you get things like Lvl 3. shields and Isometal, it's nearly impossible to die unless you're really, really bad. Something to look at in the future, I suppose.
