Theres a ranking and reviews of engines on DevMaster. If you just want to mess around with one you could try one of the game development programs. Like 3D Game Studio or something, it has a full engine but its rather limited. The open source engines are a pain in the ass to worth with but yield better results and without watermarks or other licesing issues.

Not sure if your still looking for a language, but DarkBASIC is brilliant, imo. Not neccesarily fast, but it does allow for alot and it can plug into VC# and VC++

Yep, just have to read their site though - they kinda gave up on TLR.

Digging pretty deep there, new thread link not working?... Sorry I don't check this forum very often. We're using good old C++, source code is on SF CVS if your interested, altho the current build isn't much to look at.

I think TLR and OL mutually gave up on each other. TLR didn't want a major community project shaking up business as usual and OL didn't want to sustain an uphill battle to attempt to "win" support from an uninterested indifferent complacent withering community. Shame too, its hard to imagine the kind of game this community could build if everyone set aside their bickering to unite behind a single massive community effort...guess we'll never know now.
