Some rather strange sound problems...

Okay, I'm running Win XP SP2, with SigmaTel sound. I'm usually talking to friends on ventrilo, and everything normally works fine. However, earlier today I downloaded a voice changer (y'know, to make my voice sound funny.) The second it was installed, my sound started doing weird things. My speakers stopped working, but I could still hear through my headphones, and my mic stopped working. Now, I've had this happen before, and the way I fixed it was by experimenting with the jacks, and I ended up with my headphones plugged into the front jack, and my speakers and mic in the back. For some reason, that fixed it. But today, when I DLd the changer (I've since completely removed it from my computer) and my sound messed up again, I tried the same thing I did last time and started playing around with the jacks. However, this makes weird things happen.

Say I have my headphones and speakers plugged in the back, and my mic in the front. If I pull the mic cord out, then I lose sound to both speakers and headphones, but I plug it back in and the sound is fine again. No matter which way I do it, there is always at least one thing that doesn't work. Right now, I have my speakers and headphones working, but the mic refuses to work.

Does anyone have any clue what could be causing this? Is it a bug (or a common problem with SigmaTel?) Google wasn't much help, no one seemed to be having the problem I was. Could it be a motherboard problem? I've gone into control panel but I have no audio input button under speech (that's where my friend told me to go.) I have an Audio Output, but no Input.

That's about all I can think of off the top of my head, if I left something out you need to know please tell me and I'll try to get the info ASAP. Any and all help would be appreciated.(Sorry if this post seems a little rushed, I'm in a hurry right now.)

Check for a system restore point from before you installed the program and restore it. It should fix it until you can check the program out.

When in doubt, make a save before installing a programs. Saves you every time.

Well that sure was weird. Thanks FD. I did that last time this happened, and it did not work. I did it this time just for the hell of it and it worked. That's strange. But I guess all's well now.

It still makes no sense to me how that worked this time, but not last time when I had almost the exact same problem.

Oh well, thank you very much FD.

Saves you every time

not every time, it isn't foolproof, but it's a wise thing to do and often saves a lot of headaches and frustration.

^^ Tru dat. I just didn't try it at first this time because the last time that it happened, the restore did not work. But, it fixed the problem and I didn't even lose any of my progress in Warcraft III.
