Power supply

As explained in my previous thread, I'm building an old computer. I just bought a 400W PSU from Maplin but I want to know what is the best way to calculate just how much wattage a system will require from its components. It would help for future reference.

A 400 watt PSU would be the minium for todays PC's as the old 250-350 watt PSU's are underpowered for modern equipment. So 400 watt would be the smallest PSU you should start with. Does your PSU have 2 fans or one fan? If only one I would take/send it back and get one with two fans.

Well, I can promise that it is not a today's computer.

But on to my real question, where can I find out the power consumption for individual components? Or do I just have to make an educated guess and add 200W for each "generation" of components?

It should be on the package or on the hardware it self. Now I think there is a way to check it on your PC but I'm not sure how that is done.
