Storage..

isn't it infuriating that no matter how much storage you have, there's never enough? I'm having to archive off or delete stuff from my server again despite the fact that I have 4x 80gbs in a RAID-5 array, a separate 80gb IDE, a 160gb USB drive, and a 20gb tape-drive, and several gbs of online storagem- that's in addition to the 2x 160gb SATAs in my gaming system. It's films, tv seres and music, and stored game installs and programs that are taking up all the space, even though I WinRar loads of stuff. Everything is multimedia bloatware!

Seems I'm lucky, I've got more than enough space for everything, but then again, I do not download TV serieses or movies or anything like that.
So I guess thats where the biggest difference comes in.

It seems like it would be better to have the Movie/shows on DVD rather than a drive. Or, at least get a 300 gb drive just for them. I like my musid on a seperate Hard Drive, so I can burn what ever I want on to disks. The amount at the moment is 9.6gb of music wth the typial song being 5mb in size. The back up drive is 40gb. No need yet to go to a bigger one. What can you leave stored on DVD, either regulars or duals?

One thing I had happen to me once, was that I discovered that every video I had watched on the internet for the last several months had been saved to my HD without my knowledge. I had a couple GBs in there of shorts. I never figured out why it happened.

GB? Where? I don't know what you have to store Taw, but I still only use half of my 40GB HDD. You should back up to DVD as I do .

oh yeah right, accessing dvd drives over the network, what a smart move I don't think so. I like my storage to be *there* not hang around for 10 minutes. Yes I do back up to DVD although i prefer a nice phat tape, much better data integrity. with the latest firmware update i can archive 40gb a time now, but what use is that when i have do spend ages de-archiving? I can get a 250gb USB drive for just over a ton and it's fast and reliable and films n stuff are right there.

*Waves paw dismissively* Bah, you just download too much. *Thinks* Although, if I could get P2P working well, I could easily develop a data storage problem myself. Or so I imagine... *Thinks of the possibilities*

*snickers at frustration of Mr. Tea Towels who only has 320gb in Raid 5 and who questioned the need of yours truly to install a single 250gb HDD and who now has another 250gb HDD and plenty of room to load up on the bounty that is the internet*

<sniff> you told me size didn't matter...

What Esky has failed to mention here is that his "40 GB Hard Drive" really holds 40 Ginger Beers instead of his files (hence the DVD storage...)

the Wabbit also fails to mention that the reasons he can't get P2P working properly are that he has about 1/2 dozen firewalls, won't forward his ports, and is using a 14.4kbps analogue ISA modem, and that (as outside the Burrow we all know P2P speed is highly contingent on the ratio of seeders/leechers) he only downloads obscure medieval texts no-one has ever heard of (not even me)

not that he has much time for downloading anything, he reformats Typhon 6 times a week look at this..

the latest picture of Typhon, straight from the Burrow!

If you didn't store 100 porno movies on the harddrive you might have more space

Post Sat Jan 21, 2006 3:21 pm

That'd be right, make fun of ole Typhon . He does a damn good job under very difficult conditions, despite the fact that he is rapidly aging. Poor little guy *shakes head*.

Taw - Are you telling me that you have never heard of "Njal's Saga" or "The Mabinoginon"? *Raises (metaphorical) eyebrow*

Rabbits don't technically have eyebrows you see Final . I'd be wittier today, but it is more than 43C here in the Burrow at the moment, and I ain't got no aircondit'ning. *Groans*
