how to mount weapons

How do you mount/dismount weapons that you find in wrecks/kills without having to sell them and then buy them back?

I seem to remember that there was a way to do this but can not remember how.

only when you are on a base: (You can do this while you're on the launch pad)
there is a little icon in your weapon/equipment inventory (per item) that if you click on that icon, it will unmount that piece.
Other items in your inventory (cargo hold) will suddenly have that little icon in the upper left corner of the unmounted piece. (it will show up in two pieces)
When you click on it, the piece of equipment will mount in it's respective slot as long as you have an available slot.

Been awhile since playing and could not find mention of it any where..but I remembered there was a way.
