Land on a planet or base and go to the screen that displays your weapons. I like the equipment dealerer myself, that way I can see the value of the weapon as well. Then, if you have the right lever hardpoint available, you can set it as an active weapon. If you have level 5 and the wep is level 6, you can sell it and make a little profit..

Make sure that the weapons in question are the correct class for your ship. Also, make sure that the weapon type matches up with the point type--you can't mount a beam weapon on a point for a turret or a torpedo.

The only way I seem to be able to equip them is by selling them to equipment dealer, then buying them back, it's costing a fortune!

When I buy them back they automatically go onto the empty hardpoints. What am I doing wrong?

I can only assume you've tried this already, but for unmounted (and valid) weapons, a small box will appear in the upper-left corner when you're in the equipment shop. Click this icon, and the weapon will mount.

Its a little blue jigsaw puzzle pice that appears when you have a free space. This boxes are gery in space. Look at the wepaon, on the portrait is the puzzle piece (upper left corner, I believe).
