question about Rebalance mod

My son just got Freelancer and has finished the campaign. I got some mods for him from Lancer's Reactor. One of these was Rebalance, which I have heard mentioned favorably, but when we installed it and he started it up he was ver disappointed. The mod started him in a new system called "Earth Alliance System System" (bit redundant on the naming?) and when he went to different places looking for missions they were all level 30 or higher, not really suitable for a starting character in a Patriot fighter (I think that is what he had?). He also looked at other ships available, and they all cost $100,000 to $1,000,000 or more - way WAY out of range of anything he could ever afford, especially with no missions available. Then out in space he was attacked by hordes of enemies and barely escaped into a dock. Is this where the mod was supposed to start him off as a new character, or is there something we could set to start him off someplace friendlier? He is a pretty good pilot in this game (way better than me when I sat down to try it!) and has finished the standard campaign, but in a starting ship with crummy guns he had no chance against the swarm that came after him.

Are we missing something here? Because this just seems like a really strange setup for starting off new characters.

Any help appreciated. We would like to make this mod work, as he is excited about having new systems to explore.

It's been a long time since I've seen the Rebalance Mod so I don't remember the things you're talking about...

I have a suggestion though...

Download the IONCROSS Freelancer Character Editor mk.V by JoeBoomz
This program can edit Singleplayer saved games...

Start the IONCROSS Character Editor and it will automatically load your sons saved games then you can edit one of them for him...maybe give him some money...

you can edit the following...

ship
power plant
engine
shield
forward hard points
turrets
equipment
lights
cargo
location
factions
AND money

Thanks for the suggestion, but I've already downloaded the IONCROSS editors (character editor and server admin) and found to my dismay that they require WinXP to function and will not work on Win98SE. Do you know of any similar apps that will run on Win98SE?

If you wish to just survive, you can go into the MyDocuments/Mygames/Freelancer folder to the Pref file and open it and find the
DIFFICULTY_SCALE = 0.00
normal setting is 1.00 change it to 0.00 You can then survive any encounter.

Thanks for the tip, but my son agrees with me that "god mode" invincibility makes for a very boring game.

I'm just asking, is this really the way a new character is supposed to start in Rebalance, with no jobs available below difficulty 30, and not much prospect of survival to get to someplace more reasonable. Seems a very strange way to design a starting position, with no entry-level jobs available. Hmm, I wonder if that cheat can be switched on and then off again in the same game, just to travel to a more reasonable starting system?

Is this the standard start for new characters in Rebalance, and is there some way to make him start somewhere else instead? (Some way that will work on Win98SE and not require WinXP to function?)

Your better off forgetting about Rebalance, I'm using 3.4 with both the patch & the bugfix yet the game keeps on crashing. There are some MAJOR flaws in the mod.

Try Crossfire or Just for fun instead.

P.S. You don't say which version your using,on 3.4 you start on Manhatten

Rebalance isn't the only mod with new systems, there are many pages of mods in the downloads section of TRL, with new systems, ships, weapons, etc. You should be able to find one that gives you better ships and weapons inexspencively or a way to start you with more credits.
