3D Studio Max by Autodesk

Hello, I have here in my possession a plug-in to export models for use in milkshape. I was wondering will it work correctly with Release 9 of this product. I prefer the 3D Studio Max enviroment because I am more familiar with it and because it looks better IMO.

Could anyone offer me any advice on what I should do for modeling ships? Is it not worth using 3D Studio Max? Is there a newer plug-in then the one I have (heard it was for Release 6 and I have Release 9)? I'm just wanting some information about the pros and cons of using my program of choice and to that extent, maybe some information about Milkshape and some pros and cons of that program.

I'm new in the game of modding FL but I'm not stupid, so don't be afraid to get really technical on me.

Cheers to everyone who works hard on anything Freelancer related.

don't worry, even if you don't have the plugin installed, you can always export to .OBJ format, milkshape can import that
and about 3DS max 9, i use it myself, and with quite decent results (see the finished projects and WIP thread, all of the models there were made in 3DS max 9)

Awesome. I appreciate the input. At least now I don't have to search forever and a day for 3ds max 6. Quite impossible as I found out. Lol

Okay so I tried exporting .obj files and then trying to import them into milkshape, still no luck. The files will open but there is nothing in them at all.

strange, it works for me though, perhaps if you try messing with the export stats a bit?

try exporting as a .3ds and import it into milkshape that way, .3ds keeps any UV mapping ya got which is always nice

If your using the MAX2MS3D plug-in we have here in the d/l's it should work for MAX 9, if your model has more than 2000 vertices it can take a few minutes to convert it to ms3d. Because MAX doesn't use the same XYZ orientation that ms3d and most games use, the plug-in has to recalculate everything in the model, a 15k poly model can take a good ten minutes to convert, it's not uncommon for the plug-in and MAX to freeze if you do anything with your PC while it's converting the model.

The OBJ & 3DS plug-in's for ms3d are old and can cause problems for importing models in newer versions of the format. Smoothing groups can cause a checkerboard effect in milkshape (some polys have been flipped to show the back face), with 3DS you can also find that objects/groups are imported out of alignment and orientation, depending on how they were built.

I use MAX 8 but only for non game content, usually for projects that have a very high poly count or that requires quad polys, for game content I only use Milkshape as that is what it was built for, the rest are based around architectural requirements.

Unfortunately?

Hey come on, guys - how much software do you have on your machines that's not paid for, huh?

If you spend $29 on Milkshape think if it as payment for some of the other stuff you have too

But - I'm STILL waiting for new CMP plugins that don't crash Milkshape. Come on some of you guys who know C++, we need your help badly.

What OS are you using, what version of milkshape is it, and most important of all what plug-ins are you having problems with.

I'm on XP SP2 and the only plug-in I have problems with is Kurt's CMP Importer, Colin's plug-ins work perfectly in every milkshape from v1.7.2(first one I used them on) to v1.8.1b(the latest, I upgrade regularly).
