What do you think of my ship?

Hi. I'm a straight newbie to this modding/modeling stuff and just wanted to show off a badly textured Freighter i created. Please dont mind the textures, they're just for display. This is also my first ship ever posted in a forum. I dont claim to be good at what i do, but it's fun. I also may need some assistance with my lighting. I see alot of ships posted in these forums and also in mods that are very angled and squareish. I wanted to try something different. I'm more into round edges and some sharp edges for certain parts of the ship, instead of the whole ship. I will post more ships here soon. I will also upload some of the ships i have made for downloading if anyone likes them. I havent been able to convert them for use in Freelancer yet, i guess i cant understand the tutorials. The ships will be in Max format since they were made in 3Ds Max 7 and Milkshape format since i have the max2milkshape converter. enjoy.

well to be honest - i'd hate to be one of the loaders trying to figure out how to get the maximum number of crates in it.it's just not practical looking enough to be a freighter i guess.as for being 'angled' what do you call that?its got angles everywhere!
it could be smooth and flatish for more than a couple meters somewhere like the nose - something to say 'hey this is the back end and this is the front' you know

You are right that it's not practical, but like i said, it's just my first ship posted. I didnt specify the main details for in-game use. i was sort of leaving that to whoever wants to use it in a mod or whatever. This ship is full of angles like you said. That is the case for this one. The rest of my ships have slight angles and minor sharp points that arent as visible as this one. regardless, i recieved the response i needed. Thanks.

1. Don't show us a ship that's not in Milkshape or in the game engine. It's very hard to give you critique if you aren't even showing us the ship in a rendering environment that's like what we're going to see in the game. For one thing... you don't have reflectivity or bumpmaps in the FL game engine, nor real shadows. For another, the way that light is handled is completely different than in a true raytracer.

2. From an aesthetic/design point of view... well... I'm trying to be nice here, but basically, if I can tell right away how something was modeled, it's not a good sign It's definately not what I would make, and I really don't care for the spiky look- I prefer designs with smooth curves and angles that make more sense, from a human standpoint- this doesn't look like something people would build, to me anyhow... it just seems very impractical, and it wastes internal space for no apparant reasons. I suppose that there might be good reasons for its weird hull configuration (such, as for example, making it "stealthy" but real "stealth" technology never, EVER has angles that can reflect sensor signals from one part of the object to another.

@Argh = So your looking for screenies?

Anyways, I agree, the spiky look dosent seem to fit with what it looks like it should be (Freighter/Resupply Ship if necessary). A real freighter (like the Large Transport thats omnipresent at Manhattan) is squarish, modular, blocky, ugly as hell, but it looks exactly like what it is.

Although, if you made the spikes on the bottom or prow.....

@Versoth:

I only like seeing screencaps from MS3D or from the FL game engine. Anything else is pretty meaningless for detemining how one's work is going to look in-game... which in the end is all that matters here.
