SUR limitations?

I have a simple (and maybe totally stupid) question, to follow up on what I was looking at earlier.

If you use a SUR file that's not for a ship... as a ship's SUR... what happens?

Does the game crash? Does the ship not fly right? Does everything work, assuming all of the hardpoints, etc. are placed correctly? Please, let me know...

Oh, and while I'm asking stupid questions... if a SUR file lacks a "shield bubble", can the game engine register hits to shields? IE... bases have a Loadout... is there any real reason they they can't have shields, too? Sorry if these seem like dumb questions, but I have yet to see a base with shields, and yet I've seen dockable capships that have shields.

Whoa... I've been looking at CMP/3db files...

There are things which you can collide with, and shoot... that don't have a SUR file. I have yet to find anything that can fly that doesn't have a SUR.

For example, check out the dyson_generator file... the shield generator from the end of the game.

You can surely shoot/collide/damage this thing... so ... um... what, *exactly*, is a SUR doing then? It doesn't look like it has jack to do with whether you can damage/collide with things, if you follow me here...

I think sur files are player-side files that are needed for players in order for hits to register on their ships. For example, a ship without a sur file is essentially invincible (because no hits register on it). You can use sur files of similar sized ships for yours. There is no difference. In fact, that is where 99% of the sur files for mods come from.
