try this
the guys over there made some veryvery detailed models of aircrafts (and tanks).
get into contact with them, ask if u can maybe use a mesh/skin. i donno what tools they used over there but milkshape can import a lot of formats. worth a try if u like to have today's stuff in FL (not my style but if u like it, well, go ahead).

Looking good so far.

If you havn't already, add an 'Edit Mesh Modifier', and go to vertex mode, and use the "move" tool.

If you bring the side aroudd the cockpit in a it so they follow in a fairly straight line relative to the rest of the fuselage it'll cause the cockpit to become more bubble like (and accurate). Push the lower and upper nose out a bit more to make it more rounded - A-10's have quite a weird, snub nose shape, and flatten down the fuselage either side of the cockpit.

FInally, in Edit Mesh still, go to "Polygon" mode, select the whole object, and find the "Smoothing Groups" sub-section in the 'Edit Mesh' modifier (While Edit Mesh is selected the tools appear in the bottom right in GMax and 3DSMax).

Then select groups of similar attached polygons and click one of the number button, this'll give nice flat surfaces and edges in the right places, like give the Cockpit Canopy a different number to the main fuselage and the cockpit will have a defined rim to it.

Anyway, keep pluggin' away.

Just curious though... an A-10 in Space? :/
