I would like to state, for the record, that:
1) My hatred of WindowsXP has declined to true Loathing!
2) The only reason I am not a mass-murderer is because WindowsXP lovers, and I, are seperated by the internet!

I loaded software for a new piece of hardware...
It, wasn't exactly what I'd hoped for, so I uninstalled it...
Somehow, during the uninstalling procedure, a file WindowsXP needed was deleted...
So, I couldn't get back into my computer...
No problem...
I put the boot disk in, figuring I'd simply replace the missing file, and I rebooted...
One of those fantastic new improvements WindowsXP implemented reared it's ugly fangs...
I couldn't access my hard drive!!!
So, taking the advice of the manufacturer, I purchased a full-blown $200 copy of XP...
I restored the operating system...
But every friggin' program has to be reloaded!!!
I copied those files I needed (MOD files mainly), and just wiped the hard drive, and did a fresh installation...
Now I can't load my monitor's drivers...
Or the keyboard's...
Or the video card's...
Or the audio card's...
If I wasn't a shut-in...
I'd take a shotgun to this GDMFPOS!!!

Are you trying to install windows xp on a toaster per chance?

Your only option is to reformat. Then fresh install.

More WinXP problems, eh? What exactly do you mean that you can't "load the drivers"?

Post Sat Apr 03, 2004 10:31 pm

For some inane reason...
HP has the Drivers...
Windows XP...
and all of the BS apps scrambled on the recovery CD's...
or in it's own little locked-up partition on the hard drive.
So, you can't just pick-n-choose what you want.
It's all-or-nothing!
You can either load HP's Windows XP, with the correct drivers, and/OR the Apps.
Doing either wipes out all of your settings.
When I loaded MSN's full-blown version...
It doesn't have the driver's for most of my computer's 2004 equipment.
AND!!!
You can't get them from MSN, or HP!!!
SOOOOoooooo.....
After I loaded the MSN version of Windows XP...
(and removed HP's stupid partition)
I restored the HP version of XP.
With the HP partition missing, now...
(and the related hidden/system attributes removed)
I was able to make 2 brand new "Set-Up" CD's!!!
1) Drivers, and related files.
2) Applications.
Then I went back and reloaded the MSN version!
And now, I can pick-n-choose which files, drivers, and apps I want to load.
(I also gained 15gb of HDD space, even though they claimed that the partition took only 10gb.)
(Being a computer nerd has it's advantages!)
Why HP set it up this way is beyond me!!!
And God only knows why they allow you to make a boot disk...
but won't allow it to access the hard drive!
(But I'm gonna fix that one, too!!!)
I get the impression that HP, and XP, were set up for people who just like to say that they have a computer.
(NOT for us computer nerds!!!)

computer nerds dont buy computers from HP.
nor from Dell nor anyone else adding their own branding to the OS.

true, their computers are made for those people who dont want to struggle with installing, setup, etc...

but the price for this laziness is the lack of an OS compatible with yourself *g*

And God only knows why they allow you to make a boot disk...
but won't allow it to access the hard drive!

that sounds like if the HD is NTFS and on the boot disk there are missing corresponding drives (that is, if it is a DOS-like boot disk).
there are drivers for DOS and NTFS, but they are not from MS.

Where do i download this mod.

Warzog, HP/Compaq does this crap with its customers. I had a similar experience a few years ago, when I purchased a PC from them. It came with a version of HP/Compaq windows 98, which had a bunch of proprietary software attached to the OS.

Their recovery Cd had about 640kb. It was pathetic. A lame 640kb image file and an EXE on a bootable Cd accessed the encrypted 12gb partition on my hard drive. This was how they did their restore process.

Someone at that company who makes 120,000 dollars a year decided this was a good idea. I would like to take this time to say that computer experts with degrees and certifications cannot replace common sense knowledge and years of applied experience in the field. I would rather hire a 21 year old kid to do my server administration.. a kid who grew up with the technology.. rather than some 40 year old graduate with MSCEs, CNEs, and so on.

And this is how backups/restores are handled-- 12 gigabytes (or so) of your hard drive are inaccessible to you. On the hard drive exists a fresh install of HP Windows with all the software to boot-- ENCRYPTED. Why not hand out bootable CD/DVDs? I dont know. Some nerd thought this was a better idea, and was paid 120,000 bucks to say so.

Anyway.. moving right along.. I think I can help you here.. as you seem to be at a loss of direction. You wont like what I have to say, but this remains your only true hope. Pretend your computer is not an HP.. but instead homebuilt. Pretend your homebuilt PC drivers are missing.. that for some reason or another the driver cds you once had were gobbled up by the evil computer monster. You now have to recreate a driver base for your components.

1) Open computer case
2) Take an inventory of everything inside.. motherboard make and model, video chipset make and model, sound card make and model, modem (if any) make and model, until there is nothing left to inventory. Dont forget printers and scanners.
3) Go to a friends house with a broad band connection.
4) Go to each manufacturer's site to download each driver, one by one, and burn it to CD. This could take some time.
5) Come home, re-format hard drive.
6) Install Windows XP using your freshly purchased windows XP. It should recognize most of your components.. as i found the hardware support to be amazingly broad.
7) If there are troubles with certain hardware components, install those drivers. Modems, sound cards, and motherboard components (anything attached to the motherboard permenantly) tend to be the most finicky. Usually in that order.
8) Get back online and tell us how it goes.

sp00n:
Well, we do when we can't afford what we want...
OR...
Dealers pull the ole bait-n-switch on ya!
I went to an online place to order parts for a custom built system...
When they arrived, several parts were refurbished, and a couple didn't work.
A local shop offered to build one really cheap...
Only took 'em one day...
When I went to pick it up, the price increased by over $400!!!
They claimed that they forgot to include the monitor in the quote...
Didn't have the motherboard I wanted...
Ran out of the HDD and DVD-RW's I wanted...
So, they upgraded everything without asking.
As my old notebook was fast becoming unusable...
and I kept running into dishonset people...
I got fed up!!!
I happened to be at Walmart when they got a batch of HP Pavilion a465w's in.
It's got everything I need, hardwarewise, so I bought one.

Skeeta:
It's not available, yet.
Besides my battle with Windows XP, there's a few bugs in the mod that I need to fix, first.

lvxoccvlta:
I did the old inventory bit...
Unfortunately, I could only find drivers for the CD-Rom & DVD/CD+RW drives.
HP has a disk that you can purchase with them, but I don't have the $40 to get one right now.
As to your age-discriminating statement...
I'm 52!!!
And it's been my experience that the kids who've "grown up" with the technology are the very ones who think that there's no need for backward compatibility, no need to access your HDD, no need to have the drivers seperate from the OS, no need to load more than once, no need to access your entire HDD, etc.
Us old farts still have Privateer 1, Wing Commander 1 & 2, Battle Chess, MechWarrior 1, etc, and we still enjoy playing them!
But the kids working in the industry don't care, and their attitude is what's caused the current slump in the computer market...
After all...
Why should I spend money on a new computer that will only run games from the last 4-9 years, when I have games from the last 22 years?
If my notebook hadn't died, I'd never have bothered.

Then consider me a kid who believes in backwards compatibility..

I did not mean to be discriminant based on age.. the age issue was a correlation and not a causation

I think that DOS was the most efficient OS ever made, and I would love to be able to run programs without having 100megs of RAM running to suspend windows XP in the background while I play.

Its also been noticed that many simple programs take a hell of a lot of processing power, seemingly more than they should. Back in the day, a difference between a 486 dx2/50 and a pentium 100mhz was astounding. Today, a difference between a 2.4 ghz and a 3.2 ghz is really not THAT huge. That is however 800 mhz, and not a whole lot of mileage is gained.

One would think that after the Y2K scare, backwards compatibility would be an issue.. especially since we are faced to a similar crisis in 2038 when all UNIX machines will cease. I think this is an oversight brought on by sloppy programming due to insanely fast CPU clockspeeds being developed, which encourage sloppy programming, which further encourages faster CPU clockspeeds to develop. And so on. Everyone wants the next greatest big thing.. and nobody wants to go back to make the most with what we had.

I am a youngin at 22.

Whos doesn't love DOS? I remember the good old days of DOS gaming... things were simpler then .

War - sp00n is right; the odds are that you can;t access the HDD because the file system is NTFS. There are utlities out there such as "NTFSDos" that will allow you to access NTFS partitions through DOS, but most will only allow read-only access.

Post Mon Apr 05, 2004 12:43 am

hmrz, that issue with an encrypted partition for backup sounds quite HPish

anyway, warzig, you bought a HP pavillion desktop PC? this one: Click here ?
at work we bought a HP Pavillion ZE 4400 series notebook and even there we were able to install windowx xp prof. without problems.
we only had to download the drivers from the HP-website...

*dabudababadumm*
just found this site: Click here
should help you

oh, and btw, im myself a 22 year old "kid" who would like to see backward compatibility. indeed, wing commander 1 was my first game for PC
in ENGLISH, and i didnt speak one single WORD in english back in these days. lol
