You know, I did actually run Freelancer with the QuickFix installed, and I believe that included the SDK. That was a good point though, because I only learned about the SDK yesterday (when I found the Reactor while searching for a possible fix).
Maybe I should encourage the people experiencing this to tell MS about it as well.
Anyway, on to an important update: I decided to reinstall Windows a couple of hours ago.
GOOD NEWS! Freelancer connected to an Internet server! I created a character on the server called "Oskaloosa", and easily launched to space, gated from Manhattan to West Point, and re-docked. No problems, as hoped for. It's a low-ping server for me, supposedly in Iowa & I live in Minnesota near the Twin Cities.
For now, I have only installed XP w/SP1, DirectX 9.0c, video/audio/NIC/USB drivers and the NVIDIA ForceWare firewall, Firefox 1.5 (doubt this was interfering anyway!)... pretty sure that's about it. I honestly don't know what's different about my PC now, but I will attempt to find out.
My firewall is also cranked up to high (stealthed ports, no unexpected inbound connections, etc.), and Freelancer.exe is just excepted, so I don't think a software firewall is causing this.
I am going to continue doing Windows/MicrosoftUpdate visits until I'm patched up, checking connectivity in-game on occasion. Then I'll add Freelancer stuff like the QuickFix, and finally I'll get some of my other everyday applications reloaded. If I can still play FL successfully after a day or two, that'll be great, but I'll have no idea what breaks it in the first place =P
