The general place to discuss MOD''ing Freelancer!
yargh, away from my home computer at the moment.
So - from memory (for now).
Its in the interface, hud directories I think, you'll find a heck of a lot of 3db files. Check for one with an interesting name - something like, erm, err... hmm - loot something was the example i used the other day.
Anyway, you'll need a UTF editor to open the 3db file, and then expand the nodes. One will be for textures, and if you expand it, the node will be the name of the image (cunning buggers!) - and I struggle to remember whether it has the extension included as well (ie loot_icon.tga as a node name). If you expand the node to see its MIPS or MIP0 (one is for dds, one for tga with MIPS being tga i think...) you can then click on it and select the "export".
Save the file as whatever the icon_name.extension was (just to keep it easy to remember what you have) and then open in photoshop/editor of your choice.
You'll now be faced with the icon available. You can edit the icon, or change it (using the same sort of settings for opacity etc that the image already has I think) and then import it again by repeated the process above, but selecting the import instead of export, and importing the right file type. I think that they are all in tga format for these, so it's not too much of a problem. Some may feature multiple varieties of icon - representing the greyed out, the active, and the selected active (although not sure, i stopped opening them after a while).
The news items icons are the same, in another sub directory, and you can change nearly everything afaik. The icons at the top of your screen, the ones to the top right, the nav map background, the waypoints markers, the loot icon to tractor in, the hail ship, target's etc.
As I say, this is done from memory - and if I have time when i get home tonight I'll correct any errors I've made

I have a small problem with having three thrusters on a drake. I used
hp_type = hp_thruster, HpThruster01, HpCM01, HpMine01
in shiparch.ini, but when I buy the ship, only the last thruster mount works (in other words, I can only mount one thruster, even though you can see three thruster mounts) . On NPCs, however, I can mount three thrusters and they work. Anyone know why?
EDIT: Figured it out. Appearently, the real thruster mount must be last like so:
hp_type = hp_thruster, HpCM01, HpMine01, HpThruster01

Hey. I just had a question. I have Crossfire 1.6 activated with FL and I was trying to alter an ini file with BINIQDU but everytime I resave the file and try to load the game I get a microsoft error pane and the game won't run. Am I doing something wrong, or is it just built into the game code? I'm trying to alter the price for some commodities but I can't get it to work. Any suggestions would be very appreciated.

What a coincidence, because I've just finished doing exactly that, all that came in near enough the format of a tutorial of a particular subject, I've copied and pasted into txt documents.
I've done BOTH of the newbie questions threads, and am about to start looking at all the threads here in general editing.
Then I'll be on to Tutorials forum, and then I'm done collecting and it'll be time to start coding out html and css for the website I want to put this stuff on...
Sigh, and I'm a newbie too, learning as I go by picking up bits and pieces from these tutorials, threads etc.
Nearly done Chips! LOL

I have left a complete step by step tutorial on how to create missions using new factions, new ships, in a new system. This tutorial was tested by a newbie @ modding and it worked the first time.
Check the forums if you need help. Search for Creating Missions.

Hi, i am working on a Server Side mod and i wish to make the player levls higher.
I have read the post chips did on this, and i have a problem, i get to 3.2 mill (lvl 40 in my case) and then i cant get it any higher. no matter what i do, adding cash to me so i have like 9999999 it dont move.
I have seen other servers such as jolt which have people on lvl 85 and i am baffled as to why my Ptough.ini file is doing this.
Any help will be very appreciated.
Thanks very much!
