I've been playing the game for a few days ago, and I'm enjoying it so far. But, I just got to the mission where I'm to race Hovis. I've failed this race about 20 times, and I'm seriously starting to dislike FL because of it. Why? This game cheats. When starting the race, I will trigger Cruise immediately and all's well, then when I'm about to enter the next ring, a mysterious force begins pushing my ship to the side, trying to prevent me from flying into the ring. Using strafe and maxing out the mouse sensitivity, I've been able to prevent this from slowing me down too much. Then, another mysterious force causes my cruise to inexplicably stop working! So now I have to wait for the cruise drive to regharge. If this was a rare occurance, Id pass it off as a fluke. But, this is happening 3-5 times PER RACE! I'm good at the game and doing well. My piloting skills are pretty good, and I can hold my own against multiple bogeys. If these occurances didn't happen, I'd have moved on to the next mission and been content. But no, the game has to cheat in order to compenate for the development team's lack of skill. At the end of the race, Hovis turns his weapon platforms on me? How quaint. I'm surprised he didn't booby-trap my ship while I was docked. I wouldn't put it past Digital Anvil after seeing this lame attempt at making the game more challenging. Please someone, develop a level skip for this game fast so that I can start enjoying Freelancer again!
I got off to a bad start the first time.....I tried to afterburn and then cruise.....it backfired, and Hovis got off to a two "ring" lead. I decided to still try and continued along the track. I got my cruisers fired up and kept trailing behind him. I experienced no "mysterious forces" pushing me off, and my cruisers stayed on the whole time. Luckily, Hovis took a wide turn and missed a ring, and I took the lead and won easily.
It was so easy, I thought the game designers intentionally made it simple so anybody could win it their first try?!?!?
It's amazing that you are having such a hard time with it. I think something else is obviously going on here...maybe a corrupt file or something, I don't know....but I honestly think the race was the simplest part of the entire game so far.

Winter, as I said in my post, I'm a capable pilot. I know how to fly through rings. My post clearly states that something is moving my ship sideways and I don't know what it is. Not only sideways, but up and down also. If I am flying straight at a ring, this happens. If I approach a ring from teh side(like I have to during the second half of the race) then my ship doesn't "slide". But, when I do have to turn, my cruising stops and has to recharge. I have NO clue why this is happening. I'm reinstalling the game and will keep my saved game. Hopefully this will help.
As for the difficulty of the mission, it's very easy. I can almost beat Hovis even with all of these "glitches" happening. And that's not bad considering that I'm losing 5-10 seconds of cruise speed(300) each race. If none of these weird "glitches" were happening, I probably would have won the first time. Ah well, I'm gonna go reinstall. I'll play again tomorrow and keep you guys posted. Thanks for the replies.

Also you should know that when you hit F2 to engage cruise engines it does affect your ability to manouver, even in mouse free flight. It took me so long to figure that out. Not until I read one of these posts (shift)-W starts your cruise but also your ability to manouver is much easier. When some of the guys who won on their first try ask why you are having so much trouble, they should try the race after hitting F2 and using free flight , (much more difficult).
