Yes, there are ways to skip this mission (look at the downloads section - there is a cheat allowing you to select any mission and craft).
However, don't you find it challenging to finish the mission?
As to nudging the flight recorder, you don't need any physical contact with it - just fly close enought at minimum speed, and that's it. Just don't hit it - you can turn your ship, can't you?

Yeah..I would much rather finish the mission than skip it. I jsut thought it was a bug because I was getting as close and as slow as possible and it wasnt connecting to it. Maybe I should fly under it instead of straight at it.

Now, that's strange. Usually you just have to get in close and that's it. No need to dive under it or sth. I don't have a clue why it won't connect. Think I'll have to replay the mission once again (it's been a while...) and see what's going on.

Happens sometimes, just fly from another direktion to it.
