Darkstar One Discussion

This is a open discussion forum for Darkstar One. Development team members will try and answer all your questions.

The ships shown are either potential allies or potential enemies. In Darkstar One you only fly one ship, the Darkstar One (Hence the name) handed to you from Robert, a friend of your fathers who died during the course of developing the ship due to a freak accident. Only it turns out to be something much more. When you find this out you begin a search for your fathers murderer and become involved in a destabalizing political situation that could plunge the 6 races into an all out war...

That's a good point....

Hardware wise, what specs should we have to be able to take advantage of higher graphic settings, etc?

Are the in-game cutscenes going to have subtitles?

Post Mon Jan 16, 2006 11:44 pm

@Indy

Yes certainly. Not only will you get a much finer and cleaner look, with all these new (to us since they were just implemented) effects it can look absolutely magnificant.

@Cutscenes and co...

The in-game sequences will have subtitles (which can also be deactivated). The CGI sequences (cutscenes) currently only have information subtitles. We have not decided yet wether to add full subtitles to them or not.

Well, that's good to hear about the in-game cutscenes, at any rate. It was quite frustrating with all the juicy info being given up during the Freelancer cut-scenes (such as Sinclair's statements on the Dom Kavash and how their relics tied in with the Nomads).

What've you got now? DSO's "OK-ish" requirements aren't as onerous as their "MAX IT OUT" requirements - which, by the way, hurt your wallet.

Well the only thing we have given away is how the plot starts...

There is no indication on how it continues or ends up. Suffice to say it starts were stated and ends somewere completely different. It is a complex storyline and contains over an hour worth of cutscenes with a few surprises.

The actual storyline is a closely guarded secret.

What's going to be more important: CPU or GPU?

I've got a laptop that's a couple years old with a 2Ghz Pentium M, 1GB RAM, but only a Radeon 9700 128MB. She can run Chaos Theory well enough, but this game looks like it might be too much

It will run with those specs. GPU is the more important element though. We have tested it on a 1.7GHz with a GeForce 4 Ti a while back and it ran... just not very well.

Minimum system spec tests will commence once the code optimizations have been made so we can get a clearer picture.

For reference though, running the game in high resolutions with an AMD X2 3800+, 2Gb Ram and a GeForce 6600GT averages roughly 40-60 FPS depending on the battle situations....

There are some battles that embody a few cruisers, several wings of fighters not to mention the non active NPCs flying in a system (meaning there are rougly 100+ ships in a system) were the framerate could drop rather low....

We are working on that as well so never fear!

Can you destroy space station, capitol ships, etc.?
Can you land on and fly around/walk around planets?
Can you keep playing after the main story is complete?
Will there be wrecks/aliens/uncharted systems/etc.?
Any nebulae/gas clouds/etc. systems?
Any random missions for afterstory play (if it exists)?
Dynamic Trade Market?
Viable trading?

Post Mon Feb 13, 2006 3:11 am

1. Space Stations cannot be destroyed (Since the elaborate Trade System would be thrown off balance). Capitol ships and co can all be destroyed. In otherwords anything that "moves" can be destroyed. Anything orbiting anything cannot be destroyed.

2. You cannot land, nor walk around on planets. There are "mission" specific planets that enable the player to participate in ground-based missions (Like canyon flights, tunnel flights etc.)

3. Yes you can

4. Yes there will be wrecks, aliens (6 races in total), uncharted systems etc.

5. Yes in some form or another. Kinda hard to describe. My colleague next to me just showed a fantastic "ice field" scene with a cruiser wreck. Showing off the gas clouds effect on the overall visual scheme and how it affects the sun glaring in the background, the damaged cruiser (which reflects the surrounding area) and the misty looking ice rocks floating in space. Suffice to say it looks awsome!

6. We have plenty of random missions, dynamic missions and so-called "Bar Missions" which are huge and gigantic battle scenarios, spread throughout the entire gaming galaxy. Suffice to say even after the plot there is still plenty to discover and find...

7. Those who have heared of titles like "Port Royale" and "Patrizian" can rest assured with the knowledge of a true dynamic trading system based on demand and availability. The trade system is 100% dynamic and affects every system individually based on the systems production, needs etc.

8. Not really sure what you understand by viable trading. If it means your trading will have an affect on the overall status of the system then the answer would be yes, it does.

What I would consider "viable" trading is where we could make a living at it (be able to advance at the same rate as, say in, missions). In addition to trading, has anyone considered mining for a living? In Freelancer, mining took way too long to be worth pursuing.
