Wow, I haven't posted on TLR in a while, but I just bought the game and have played through to where you have to go to Kabro's Hideout, and I upgraded my hyperdrive but it is 5.1ly from the nearest system? What should I do?

AND...

Yes, I agree the game is not really up to par with FL. If you take everything that was WANTED in freelancer, and the controls of starlancer, and put in NOTHING else, you get DS1. It has all the things that I really wanted to see in FL, but nothing of what I loved. There is one station, unless you land on something for a storyline. You can't land on planets, the scale is still wrong (I was hoping to hyper space within a solar system), and the free missions are bad. The only thing I do is kill pirate gangs (not yet good enough to liberate systems). Upgrading the DS1 is also a pain, because it is so slow! And I thought you could take away changes, so that it could be refitted for different missions. Overall I would rate the game a 5.2 out of 10, because of the gameplay, and all the other problems. (I have not had crash issues yet, but did notice some flickering and odd stuff)

Just my 2 cents

Well, I'm about to play DSO for the first time. Have been disappointed by many Freelancer wannabes.

I'll judge for myself and respond...

I am about half way i think, just got eona back and i havnt really had many problems other then the constant cd check. but graphics are nice even though my card is set on low, also i will admit the freken missions are always the same. the canyon shooting was the only kewl mission i think ive had so far.

my specs are 2.2 dual athlon 64 4200 and 2 gigs of ram - some reason it shows as 1.87 gigs.
video card is 256meg g force but everything in the game is locked at low.

so far im stuck now at the dang flak mission

this didnt get good reviews?? how have u ppeople found it??

Post Sun Oct 01, 2006 2:00 pm

other then every system being the same i liked it, lest the story line and finding 10 artifacts to upgrade with takes freken forever.

also the damn flak mission is to freken hard, i read someplace that it was supose to have 4 groups of thuls. i have found close to 8 or more.

So did the fighting drones ever make it into the game? Iv'e heard that they make wingmen unnesescary.

Beware pirates bearing gifts!

I am a staunch fanatic when it comes to graphics and variations. If there is no variety or 3 dimensional travel, then the game is caput before I even try it out.
Where is that headstone?

I just got the game, and i cant wait to play it. Its installing right now and i cant stand to wait. Its unbearable! I havent gotten a new game in weeks, and the one thing that is going to kill the craving is a space-sim that would make freelancer fans proud.

I think I'm gonna have to pass on this one. For those who are considering purchasing the game, allow me to make a suggestion: Download the Demo. Play it, Enjoy it for the few hours it takes to complete and then move on.

I played the demo, read the reviews and I'm not impressed. It by no means holds a candle to FL in any respect (although I did like the Jumpdrive animations (very BSG-like) ). All-in-all the game has a lot of potential that the developers failed to make use of. The trade system is a waste of time so basically you end up going through the game taking this mission or that blowing up loads of the same baddies. Everything starts looking the same after about the 3rd system so what's the point in going anywhere? Mebbe its better in its original German form? Oh well, hopefully someone will come up with a suitable follow-up to the FL franchise. Until then...*goes back to playing FL*

Brought it
Played it for 3 hours
Took it back
Traded it in and used it as a pre-order for Star Trek:Legacy

ouch. it's too bad really (no MP kills it for me) - i think there would be more demand for a readymade spacesim engine with no content, then a game with no modding support and widely reported failings (ehehehe.. no comment on irony).. doesn't even gotta be MP, just support users adding as much content and functionality as they want.... I'd buy that for a dollar(or a hundred)

freelancers biggest failing is its ship models- they left a whole mess of what appear to be alpha quality/generic ships. i'm talking about the "star" civilian series, the corsair series which actually does look good, but still uses hideous tile textures, and the 'utility' ships. these models are just horrible.... the DS1 models don't feel particularly inspired, but at least they're all properly UV mapped.

fyi guys, freelancer's got quite a lot of unused features that we're just getting around to exploiting, like zones with increased drag (useful for simulating atmosphere, gravity, and setting higher local cruise speeds), weapon-innaccuracy(scatter), randomizing controls for good prices per base, player/pilot templates, and..oh another dozen or so miscellaneous things that I'm keeping under my hat

I just finished the last mission.

I tried playing after the initial installation but the game wouldn't start. After patch 1.2 the game ran, but not all of the controls worked. After patch 1.3, the game was stable and all of the controls worked. I'm not enough of a hardcore player to care much about MP so that's neither here nor there for me. Open-ended play is always a good thing. After all a linear storyline where you can't play after you've finished the last mission is so boring. I liked the jump drive, and having the ability to go anywhere I want at any time (provided it's within jump range). The characters didn't look bad, and neither did the ships, weapons, or weapon effects. The various levels of upgrades for the player ship looked very cool. That having been said, I also saw a lot of things that could be improved in a major way.

At roughly 4.5 gigabytes the game is massive. I don't know where all that data went, but I'm guessing it's mostly used on making it look pretty. On that note, while the game looked nice, it seemed a little too demanding in terms of system requirements for what you get in terms of diversity. Each race has been assigned two faces, and while every other game I've ever played of this kind shares the same problem, the presence of flight masks and more than one sex per race make it less obvious. On occasion you hear a couple of young (male) pilots comment on your ship saying, Pilot 1: "Look at that. That ship looks awesome." Pilot 2: "I've never seen anything like it. That must be really expensive." I don't mind it that much, however this event uses the same two voice tracks for all 5 races including the female Thul.

One of the things I hope for in a video game is a realistic look in terms of distances, both interstellar and interplanetary, as well as the positioning of stations, asteroid fields, and various other planetary bodies. DS1 failed to deliver in both of these fields. The distances between star systems seems a little close. All of the stations and mining asteroids are in orbit of the same planet. This leaves the rest of the system rather barren. Also none of these facilities with the exception of one trade station are dockable. I like having a system to explore, not just some little patch of space.

Dark Star One has a number of issues. The systems are too small, the market's limited, and your options of what to do with yourself post storyline are less than satisfying. However I also see an enormous potential in the hands of a skilled modder.
