New to freelancer

I'm new to freelancer, and returning to PC gaming after about 10 years console-only. I fell in love with the demo, and just received the game off ebay about 3 days ago. And now I find out that there's an active community for Freelancer after all these years. This is wonderful.

How is multiplayer? I'm playing single player at work now, so I can't try it, but my week of watch is ending soon, so I can finally take the game home. is it still active? persistant? trading, or just kind of a deathmatch zone?

I like freelancer an awful lot, it's got a very nearly perfect interface and beautiful environments, but it's greatly varying difficulty level, all to rapidly moving (and forced) story, and somewhat underdeveloped trading system have me looking into your *many* pages of mods. Do you guys have any recommendations for the new guy? The massive download section is awfully intimidating, and picking a starting point is a challenge.

Also, since I'm very recently back to PC gaming, and simply love freelancer, I'm wondering what other games you folks like to play. I have an awful lot of catching up to do, and Elite and Privateer were about the only other games in this category that I've played. Each stole large chunks of my life. I just bought x3--for some reason thinking that I could run it, but it turns out that I should probably be looking at x2 since I don't feel like buying a video card anytime soon. Eve online also looks like something else I could try.

first, welcome...

if you are looking to MOD, you will need Freelancer Mod Manager... otherwise know as FLMM. This program allows you to try mods, and chang back to regular, or try other mods, without having to reinstall. If your looking for mods to try, it comes with some, or you can look for your favorite Scifi shows or many other goodies on the site.

Multiplayer is different depending upon the server you play on, some are roleplay, while others are geared towards player v. player contests. you can join a clan for protection, get involved in wars, or just go it alone, with all the fun and trouble that comes with. Some servers run mods that require you to have beofre you can play on them, others do not, some run just regular FL. Its all up to you.

Try different servers, see what you like, this site is a good place to look for servers. the main page has banners with links to various FL servers that are up and running.

Thanks for the point in the right direction. FLMM is a very complete tool and it works well. I tried a bunch of mods last night. I think the discovery mod with openSP is my favorite so far.
I'll probably try online with it a bit later.

I'm also looking forward to trying the phoenix RPG mod, but in singleplayer it was just dropping me in an empty system with only three stars to run into. And the evolve mod with dynamic economy is also looking like something to try.

As far as online play goes, which is currently going to have the most active users? Is there one that stands out as being more populated, or a better starting point?

Well firstly, a warning about mods, remember to turn them off before going to multi player. some servers have an auto ban witch will ip ban you for haveing mods. simply turn them off before going on the net, and before useing a mod on the net, check with the admin to see if they allow mods, and what mods the server has. turning on a mod the server dosint have will crash it.

and secendly 4 good servers are:
Raw=2000 start cash, this is as basic as it gets, fun for a challenge.
24/7 Modders universe=for testing mods and such.
24/7 Freelancer Universe= good server(haveint been there for awile, it was good last time i checked...lol.)
24/7 Freelancer RP LV= you start with a rhino, and freghters can be looted, so if you get shot, they get your stuff, if your a freghter. still a great server.

so theres what help i can offer.

Welcome to freelancer....
About the story being hasty, you're right. But remember that when you are called to do a story mission, you can ignore the summons or decline the mission, giving you more time to trade/explore/etc. You can decline almost all the story missions, except the last ones. Have fun!
