There are two different types of firewire, firewire 400 and firewire 800. I think 800 is only for macs. The picture below will show you what firewire sockets looks like.

you can get pci firewire cards for your motherboard, or external adaptors. don't throw it away! firwire 400 is still pretty fast, although "in theory" usb2 is "supposed" to be comparable, but it hardly ever is because the bandwidth is always being shared amongst so many other devices.

firwire 800 is for pcs too, but you need a mb that natively handles it or an 800 adapter.

Adaptec make very good firewire cards, bit pricey, although you can get cheap ones from other manufacturers too but they are problematic.
