old gaming system exploded....Y?

2 years ago i sat down to play my fav old nes consold game "terminator 2" cez i never got the chance to beat the game. It was a long fun game that u use the gun w/. "to those that had played the game" i was at the part where you are trying to go back in time wile shooting those things coming out of the doors. anyway, finding time short i press the start button and turned off the tv and left to do what i was going to do 2 hours later i came back and sat relaxed on the recliner looking down i saw smoke coming out from the part on the shelf where my game system was i grabed the system and jorked out the power cord, it exploded it my hands, it only bruned my hands, did'nt blow off any fingers luckly, but it still lingers in my mind y it exploded like that, there was nothing inside the mechine that would make a boom like that. nor i could find any evidince that someone had put a big fire cracker no no....more like a hand grandne in the thing. Any guesses as to y this happed would be very helpfull.

Capasitors, can explode, though not very loudly. Transformers can burn out, but don't usualy explode. Resistors and chips burn out, Diodes and transistors, little to blow, witches, don't but can arc. Circut boards can crack and the voltage jump across the traces. Little else that could "Explode"

sounds like the power transformer blew. very common with old electronic equipment, often caused by dust or corrosion on the coil from condensation due to not being used.

Yes pro sci-fi, the thing made a huge bang at first (like a gun shoot bang) then made a crackle when it crackled i saw little sparks come from the back where the power cord hooks up to rest of the system.
