noob freelancer question

Hi all, first post by Noob FL player...

I've only been playing for about 8 hours having bought Freelancer yesterday so there is a lot that I don't know. I've been playing X2 and X3 for the last few months but needed a break.

I've been busy doing assass and combat missions to get used to the combat system. I haven't started mission 2 yet.
10 BBS missions completed and 51 kills. 21,468 credits. I'm saving up for a Cavalier or Dagger, but the apparently I need to be in with the Rogues to buy the Dagger and I'm "hostile" as all my missions are to kill 'em, and it doesn't seem worth spending 20k to bribe em when I could use that money to buy a Drake. So looks like I need to save a bit more and get a Drake, the Starflier is a bit crap but its done me o.k. so far.

Problem is that I have filled up my 20 capacity cargo bay and can't pick up any more loot. I have:

3 Lavablade Mk II (Class 2) guns that I currently have mounted

In hold:

3 Drail (Class 3 -- that you said to hang on to)
3 Javelin Missile (Class 1)
Countermeasure Dropper (info screen says needs countermeasure flare and is not mounted)
2 Zaphiel Turret (Class 1) off Rogue ships (?)

I've also got 10 nano / shield batteries in total.

Should I sell the Zaphiels and Javelins - I've been picking up other Javelins and selling for $25 but these are $125?, more anyway.

Should I sell the Drails?

If I'm going to have to save for a Drake then I might as well sell the Drails in the hope of getting more in loot?

For the time being, sell. You will always pick up weps from battles. Once you start going up in levels, more ships will be available.

Welcome to TLR.

if you wont my opinion (Iv played it 5-6 times) then get the Rino its got more guns it holds 80 cargo 3 guns 5 turrets and handles like a pig (really, really badly) but apart from that its a bloody good freighter. Then you will make money even quiker by trading and fighting (just pick your fights until your more experenced then you will be able to do wot me and my dad do and kill lvl 19 bounty hunters with a lvl 3 ship) but not meaning to bragg or anything but just keep trying aand get better... everyoone started from nothing just like you have... have fun

Welcome to TLR Brett. Well done on X2 and X3, I threw 'em in the bin 'cause I could not control the craft so I will bow to your skills on that one.

Your own style and interest will determine whether you invest in a freighter or fighter so I would not say it is up to me either way. Personally I enjoyed the combat and I certainly think you have a better chance of survival in an average fighter early on. If you start again and follow the game story iirc you can stay on the right side of the Rogues long enough to get a Dagger. ***(you already know about it but this may be spoiler territory now, there are still new FL arrivals like yourself regularly)*** The Dagger rocks. Totally! Looks, moves and fights exactly as it should. Last time I played SP I used it right pretty much to the end of the story.

Sell the spare weps and make some creds. Get a Patriot if you want, it is enough to get through the early game missions and better ships will make themselves available as needs.

Use energy weps if you want to save creds on missiles as those level 1 and 2 ones are not worth the effort anyway.

In Dru's humble opinion of course!

EDIT: Oh yeh, forgot, why not a Liberty Light Fighter? They are available early on are they not?

thanks for all the replies. I ws being a muppet with the cargo. I thought it was like X and the weaps take up cargo space - I had actually got 20 free, duh!

Liberty Light Fighter? I dl'ed a ships list but that isn't on it - can you point me in the right direction?

I've done a few more assass. missions and now have abot 35k in cash so I reckon that I'll get the Liberty Light Fighter if I can afford it or keep saving for a Barracuda - as the ships list reckons that that is the berst you can get for 71k - but I'm open to all comments.

WRT to X, yes the learning curve is insane -- but when you get into it, it is such a cool game - but after hundreds of hours in a Mamba Raider I've got combat fatigue!

cheers.

If you are already able to afford the Barra or similar then get it and get on with the plot lad. Provided your rank permits you to purchase both the ship and weps to go with.

Seriously, get on with the missions so you can get 'em out of the way and start playing the real game...FREElancer!

at the start you can get a Defender(level 2) at Battleship Missouri in New York for $12260,1600 shield,30 cargo 5 guns/1 turrent, upto class 4 weapons

Doh!!! Defender, that's what I meant, it is a Liberty Light Fighter in class not name. Sorry to send you on a goose chase Tripple7. That rig will do the job at the start for sure. Of course, my advice still stands...get on with it!

Thanks pearc2!

By all means, go to Curacao and get yerself a 'Cuda! Good ship for the price, and it'll help you get used to energy management real quick and you'll want to know that when you go to get the Hamerhead at (Bzr-rp-p-p-) base in the (s-s-k-k-kr-r-i-t) system...Damn static..I hate dialup...

@ Druid- Didn't know about the Dagger SP trick- thanks to you, I now have (another) reason to play the SP game (again, still, etc.) I presume this is true in the modded versions of both SPand MP- at least in your experience?

@Fred: I used the Dagger for most of the SP missions. The reason I stopped was actually that I was playing FL again while waiting for a new game to arrive. I had not transferred my save games to my new p.c. so had to do something to spice up SP while I waited for delivery. When it (F.E.A.R.) arrived I rushed the last missions so gave in to an upgrade. I should go back to saved games and try to do it to the end just to prove it to myself but I would not take the false credit of actually having finished. It will easily take you beyond halfway without too much effort but with the right weps balance.

Regarding mods, my p.c. and internet connections were total pooh until only recently. Online or modded versions were unfortunately not possible as downloads took a lifetime and the machine was creaking at the seems. My new toy will run anything I can find for it so only now am I enjoying a mod. Monkey Universe online is the first attempt and well worth a visit, but only in my very limited SP experience.
