You might try the Universal War server- pretty much plain vanilla, but a good community. There are server side mods, so you wont have to worry about client side mods if you're not familiar with 'em. Another one is the Eagle 24/7 server- here again, plain vanilla, but lots of activity and a good community- Dont know how you feel about mods, so.....

Crossfire is a good server:
It has a good community, one of my if not my favorite mod, good tradeing (REALLY good trade runs if you find them ), at times lots of players and the least amount of players if seen on at once is 7, and great admin, clan friendly, the only downside is it gets a little lagy when there's lots of players online or when the server hasn't restarted in a while.

NOTE : you'll need to download both the 1.56 and the 1.57 versons and the Open Sp for singleplayer. Also the mod is a pretty big download lol so it might take a while for dial up

theres also the evolved 24/7 rpg server great atmosphere players and mod not as large a Download as some other servers.

I would suggest any of the servers for freeworlds 1.65 This is an excelent mod and the community will help you learn the ropes very quickly.

There is only one Freelancer server to even consider, and thats the Void Server.
