Countermeasures

OK, What is going on here. No matter what happens my ship never seems to launch countermeasures. Have tried standard and Imperial but I keep getting killed by missiles. I am sure this has been asked a thousand times but is there anyway to launch them manually?

if you haven't changed your default keymap, hitting 'c' launches countermeasures
