Kinda Lost

Hey guys,

I come from the Praetoria Guard, a well known Halo 2 community clan, and having discovered Freelancer I wish to start a dedicated server. Now our whole persona is the Phoenix symbol, everytime we create a machinima video or a website with our name on we use this.

And so I thought, hey there are Eagles, Falcons and Hawks in this, so I had the idea of basing a ship design off either on of those. I'm guessing the Eagle, but the others seem to look more hard to hit with their missing middle wings and top fins etc.

I would like to create an experimental EHF (Extremely Heavy Fighter) called the Phoenix but here is my first problem.

Most of the tutorials here and based on starting from scratch etc and in looking at some of them I can't seem to figure out where to start in my situation.

I basically want to take the existing Eagle, Falcon and Hawk ships and be able to re-skin them, and then get to work with a lot of ini editing (which I can figure out mostly with other tutorials).

I'm basically looking at how to open what I need, edit the textures, and be able to put them back, if someone could explain this to me I'd be very grateful.

What I could really do with is someone that can be there from start to finish whilst I build this new ship.

It's primarily going to be an admin ship of sorts, but I would also like to be able to use it to play with, as the admins don't just need to sit in New York all the time, they should get in on the fun also hehe.

Thanks for your time guys!

For .ini editing,i'd suggest using the SDK 1.3 (or is 1.5 we're on now :S) from here if u search for it u'll find it.Texture editing-i use adobe photoshop and adobe imageready to convert all textures. There's tons of very good tutorials here which i revert to many many times.

Always glad to hear of another modder joining the community.Good luck!

Well, I have both of those adobe products and know them quite well.

What I don't quite understand is where to start in a tutorial, because all I would like to do is copy all the relevant files for either the eagle, falcon or hawk, edit the texture, and then paste them where needed and import them into the game.

I can't seem to get the right point of entry into the tutorials to pick up where I need to, with my basic grasp of modding Freelancer.

Hope that helps.

search for Kasdia's texture guide- this is exactly what he used as the example.

the easiest way is to use the XML converter on the mat

it will extract the textures and you can edit them with the DDS plugin from nvidia.then using the XML->UTF tool you can repack the .mat file(cv_ships.mat)

Aha, thanks, I understand that!

I decided to go with the tutorial, and have followed it up to the point of importing with no problems ...

I have been copying and pasting out the 256x256 texture in order to test some effects on it in corel paint shop pro x, and then paste it back into photoshop and save as normal. When I look at them in Photoshop they look as intended, but when I import and save cv_ships.mat and load the game there looks to be no alteration at all to the Eagle ... I even tested by doing some effects just in Photoshop and still no change

I don't understand what I'm doing wrong...

Anyone have any suggestions?
