An easier way to hardpoint a ship

I have worked with 3dsmax for years and I know quite a few people here use it as well. Personally I find Milkshape to be terribly cludgy and a pain in the patoot to use. But it works well enough for exporting to CMP especially with the newest plugins. Anyway I started out hardpointing my ships in Milkshape and found it to be a real struggle as Milkshapes viewports and cloning system aren't half as useful as 3dsmax's.
Anyway this all brings me to my point.
Using the plugin from this site> http://www.mds.mdh.se/~elt01mcg
You can export directly from 3dsmax to Milkshape, preserving all of the scene elements in the process.
This means you can do everything from modelling to texturing to hardpointing in 3dsmax where it is much easier and then export it all to a .ms3d file.
Also this makes it simple to create yourself a hardpoint template which can be imported into you models and reused again and again.

Anyway I hope this all helps some people.

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!! Finally a ms3d exporter that works with 3ds max 6 this is great!!!!!!!!! my ms3d just expired and it wont take the serial but this fixes it for me. I can have my fellow modders export to .cmp for me

Would this also work with gmax?

Post Mon Aug 09, 2004 5:47 pm

Hrm not sure about Gmax but the plugin authors website lists several versions and one of them might wrok since gmax accepts some of 3dsmax's plugins.

Sorry I can't give a more definitive answer.

Given the cost differnce between ms3d to max.. you get a lot of bang for your buck.. and it irritates me that ppl continue to bag a proggy that has almost all the features using plugins of any of the non "Cludgy" versions.

I have max 5 and ms3d and if ya cant model in ms3d then dont ridicule it. I was always taught that - "a poor workman blames his tools"

thats an opinion, i find ms3d much easier that gmax, though it has less tools i still can make almost anything I want, i even remade a ship from gmax in ms3d. so dont go around blaming progams ms3d is just as good, it all in the skill i learn in ms3d since its the one that works with freelancer and i find it much easier than gmax. it all depens on what progam you use first, you used 3ds max first didn't you? go ahead admit it. dont say "this program suck cuz i'm to stuck up to learn how to use it."

Post Thu Aug 19, 2004 4:49 am

Umm I never said "MS3D is a worthless program" or anything like that.
I said I prefer 3dsmax and find MS3D to be very hard to use.
Yes it is entirely a matter of preference and I personally did start out using 3dsmax as back when SFC2 came out it was the only program with a plugin to import and export te models.

Anyway I didn't set out to "bag" MS3D I merely meant to pass along some information to my fellow 3dsmax users that it was terribly easy to HP a ship in 3dsmax before sending it to MS3D.

Oh and I don't care how good a workman is he'll still cry the blues when his saw has no teeth. I'm sure if MS3D was all I had to use it would seem just fine but 5 minutes with 3dsmax and it'd be clear which is the superior product. Price is not a viable issue for debating these two products. I will guarantee that 99% of fan modellers either a) got their copy for free b) got it from or for work or c) got it for a college course at a academic discount. Very few people are truly insanely wealthy enough to pay $1500 just to make free models for the community.

Enough of the soap boxing I agree that if MS3D was my only option I would be happy enough with it and would be grateful to have it.

crazy, huh? someone honestly thinks ms3d has all the features that 3dsmax got?

everyone will tell you 3dsmax is the best 3d app .. maya, lightwave, etc come close but ms3d should not even be mentioned with with those names

got rid of that lol

this should be stopped tho .. that`s not point of discussion here ..

and if you model the ship in 3dsmax of course it`s easier to add hardpoints in max .. no doubt

I personally tried several different modeling programs first: primarily blender and milkshape. Then I did gmax when I worked through Drizzt's ship tutorial. It was like an answer to prayer. Off the point though. I checked the plug in. It didn't work with gmax. I'm still looking for the all illusive gmax cmp exporter so I can go straight from gmax to freelancer without touching milkshape. However, I haven't seen anything yet.

rimshot, i was trying to stay away from here but your post has really gotten to me. the fact that you say milkshape is very low on the hierarchy of 3d modelling programs is very wrong. if you have ever taken the time to look at the tools tab in milkshape you would see a plethera of tools begging to be used. it also has the simplest interface and dozens of importable and exportable file types. milkshape offers you all this for $20, and that includes free updates to new versions, and free plugins, unlike lightwave which is $1500-$2000 and charges you for plugins. 3dsmax is also what...$500, $600? i must say that piracy has brought the nearing end to dynamic downloadable software, and with the surging power of the internet, entire programs can be downloaded in one sitting, and a cd crack or keygen found in mere seconds.

the fact that you say this discussion is pointless rimshot, is incredibly ignorant or shortly thought out, i do not remember a rule saying that having a logical discussion or debate was considered useless. it is people like you, the over-confident, single-minded, unaccepting people, that make it hard for people to have differing opinions, the very thought that you think you can post your opinion as a fact is pathetic. i for one prefer milkshape over any other modelling program, and i am sure others, my teammate Harrier for one, will also tell you the same thing. so please, in the future, do not come into a topic to post your opinion with the idea it is a well known fact. people have opinions, even though you may not approve of it.

A general reply here , I Just want to clear something up...

I own milkshape and max5 and paid for them both in good Aussie Dollars.

I am not a student, I dont work in an office where I have access to the software, and I didn't "steal" either program.. sure I bought mx5 at a discount but not a huge one... 1/2 price.. in fact ...though I had to hunt around for it.

So before people start saying that people would not spend 1500 dollars on a program so they can model is crap.. not everyone who frequents these forums is penniless...

Never said you must have stolen it Harrier. Just that it seemed unlikely anyone would spend hundreds if not thousands of dollars on 3dsmax just to make models for free. The point about cost does however stand, when two programs are so outrageously divergent in cost they cannot really be compared on that basis. It's alot like comparing a Mercedes to a Pinto they both get you to the same place one just does so with alot more style. 3dsmax6 currently costs $3995 in US dollars and personally I think it's about $3945 too much. I don't think everyone on the forums is penniless and I'm happy for you that you are well to do Harrier but I'm sorry to hear you spent that kind of money out your own pocket for a program you apparently dislike so much.

hey parabolix, could you calm down plz ..

ok i`m sorry i know what i said has no value, mainly i was just trying to do the opposite of what it turned out to be ..

i was trying to get to the point:
crymson said it`s easier to hardpoint models in gmax .. that was meant for people who make their models with gmax .. and may not know this ..
that`s why i said it`s undoubtedly true, if you know you can hardpoint in the same program you`re working with ..
so don`t get me wrong ..

on the discussion about the 3d apps as well, ok i have no right to say stop but i thought it leads to nowhere (as it did ..
3dsmax ain`t the best .. there are even better for example houdini (and i don`t have more names in mind now, anyway)
but if you don´t agree that 3dsmax is a different level than ms3d, i may accept it .. but i think you need a visit at the doctor`s ..

so, we all roger now?

btw you said:
it is people like you, the over-confident, single-minded, unaccepting people, that make it hard for people to have differing opinions, the very thought that you think you can post your opinion as a fact is pathetic.

that`s the worst description of myself that i ever heard .. so stop judging people without knowing them !!

EDIT:
damn, the worst description of myself that i could even imagine .. tell you, i need an excuse from u2 for this ..
can`t believe it, what have i done to you?

Rimshot, if you do not want me to say things like that about you, maybe you should consider not giving me a reason to say it. now knowing you, i have to go by what i read in the forums by you to tell what kind of guy you really are, and your previous post projected quite a negative image. as i said, you believe your opinion is the truth, and your most recent post has no signs of differentiated thoughts...i especially liked your "visit a doctor" bit...i didnt realize that opinions different than yours are unhealthy...i guess i should make my way to the emergency room immediately after finishing this post huh...one thing, what makes 3dsmax or houdini for that matter better than milkshape...the fact that they are more expensive? in the long run, every modelling program boils down to the same core and can do most everything alike, except renderings, but does the lack of rendering tools really drop milkshape that far down on the scale...i dont think so...also how can hardpointing by any easier in any programs, it involves making 3 vertices...whoa!!!

anyway rimshot...i think you need to get your hypocracy under control, you bash me for "judging you" but you say anyone that thinks milkshape is better than 3dsmax needs to visit a doctor...i do not believe that i am in the wrong here, i am just posting my fair opinions, which everyone else is allowed to do, despite rimshot's disapproval.

Crymson,

I am a tad perplexed by your reply, where did I say I did not like max 5, in fact I do like it, though I will be the first to admit that the transition from one to the other is a new learning curve as the interface is different .. Notice its max 5 not 6.. When max 6 came out a lot of the retailers had versions of 5 on their shelves.. I certainly did not pay $3000 odd dollars for it.. in fact it was considerably less than that ,approximately 1/10 of that price.. call me lucky maybe...but I made many phone calls until I found it at what I consider a very reasonable price.. I am not well off and never said I was...

I expressed an opinion and that seems to rub people the wrong way, I did not disparage Max. Seems that has been overlooked in all the bull****.

Pointless argument anyway... all over how easy/difficult it is to make three vertexs and connect them to form a hardpoint.. how bloody hard is that.

P.S A good workman would make sure that his tools were in top order that the saw is sharp that 's what makes a good workman the converse apoor one...i'll leave you with that thought.
