** Tutorial ** - Drizzt4.0''s FL Ship Creating Tutorial
Here you can discuss building custom ships, texturing and 3D modeling in Freelancer
Welcome back Drizzit. I'm glad things are working out finally for you. I hope they keep working out as well.
Harrier about my earier question about orientation, nevermind I figured out what you were talking about after rereading about twenty-eleven times, and reviewing CW's tutorial on hardpoint orientation. I think part of my problems came from using the hardpoints from your Hp download and just moving them into place cause when I just made them on my models no problem, but when I use yours some of them don't work right if in certain spots. It's a great tool, especially the pilot/chair, but for the weapons it just seems to cause me more trouble than if I do them myself. I also apreciate the insights on the flying sideways stuff. I find now on my models that I have to reorientate my models and flip them over before I export them. That was the problem there. Only two major problems left and both of them with texuring. One I can solve with practice, but the other has to do with milkshape itself. Do you know why or what could be causing milkshape to crash when I try to tex map certain faces on my models? For example, a coulpe of models I only have 1 exhaust port, so I would assign a tex to that group(2 or 4 triangles, all on the same plane), then I would go to map that section, the program would frieze, then I get a windows error box that says the program has to close then it does. It has only done this on only that one spot on those models, but if I map them with say the intake group faces, then it's smooth sailing. It happens regardless of the texture or for that matter the model. If it's at the stern of the ship and 1 plane it crashes the program. So I ask is it something I'm doing or is there a flaw in the program, do you think?

Junior1210,
Sorry about the hardpoints dont know exactly why it happens, they work o.k. for me, however, the whole thing was more as an aid not as a definitive work on hardpoints, more to give ppl the idea than anything else. Glad you got the orientation thing sorted.. I hope the ship flys looking ahead now.. lol
As to the texturing thing....I have found that milkshape will sometimes crash for no apparent reason.. by a process of elimination i think it comes down to a "group mismatch"sometimes milkshape doesnt reassign 2 groups to 1 it sorta mixes them up, and when you select that "group" and go to texture co-ordinate editor it chucks an internal wobbly and crashes. Two things I can suggest that may fix it.
1. Select the area in question , weld all the verices then regroup it.
2. Texture the area panel by panel and texture it that way
If that doesnt work then select the area that is giving you problems, duplicate it then hide the old one and try texturing the "new" group.. you will have to weld all the vertices again though. once satisfied that it will accept the texture unhide the 'old' one and delete it.
Failing all the above.. and i am assuming the copy you have is legal, email Mete Ciragan @

hi guys
and Drizzt4.0 this a great tutorial
but i have a little tow big problems
the first one is i cant see my ship even when i change the lod to 0, 2000
but i can see the the other parts of it (the sheild and the lights and the other stuff)
and the second problem is that i cant put any weapon on it
the torpedo and the other weapons and yes i put the hardpoints in the milkshape
and rename it to what you said in the tutorial
when buy the ship there is no place to istall any weapon or torpedo only the mine and the counter mesure
and by the way i didnt put a turret hp is this the problem ????
and you said that u used the defendier as example
so i used the eagle insted of the defendier ( because i put six weapon hp)
and also it didnt work
so please any one can help me

Ok thanks Harrier I'll ry that. At this rate I'll have something to show for my trouble in a week or two to show you all(I hope?!)
Naameh2002, lord knows I'm no expert or even a journeyman for that matter but at a guess I'd check the script for your ship again( and again, and again) line by line. It's amazing how the smallest mistakes can screwup everything in FL.

i get all my guns in the same place and my ship is invisable
my thrusters semm to be where i put them but that is the only thing that is also i can't get four flames out the nozzels
I have mad progress on my own i exported with the mat exporter and now i get a flat white ship (due to type o) but my ship is verry small and is side ways maby i'm retarded or something but i don't get it

you may have answered this in one of the replies on the forum already, but I am curious...Milkshape doesn't want to work on my system, can the ship model be made in 3d studio max 6 or GMax (if it works for me...) and converted to .cmp format from there? If so, where can I find the converters and how does it affect the model creation process in your version 1.5 tutorial?
ceylon, two things, 1st is that your ship is very small cause you didn't scale it big enough. To fix this when you are done select all in editing, then click each screen then zoom all the way out. Then go to scale and put in 2 in each axis and scale it until it fills the screen. As for being sideways rotate the ship back into original position then export. It might take a few tries but you'll get it.
Crawfu, sorry but I can't help with yours. You might want to ask Chips or Crabtree, they might be able to help.

thanks junior1210 that was the missing part
But now my ship is invisable i set the LOD to 0, 2000 in the shiparch.ini and i used the manual method because the mat exporter wouldn't open or load my texs so i inserted the my self
Thanl all of you who help us noobs
I never seem to get the most out of life untill i take someone elses!
