System freezes

The place to ask for technical help with running the demo or the full game...

System freezes

I am pulling my hair on my head out, what little I have left. I get to a planet or base and just as the dialoge box opens for the equipment or merchandise the screen freezes. I can see the box and the mouse pointer and there is some staticy sound but no movement. The whole system locks down. I can't tell if this is a sound issue or a video issue. It works most of the time, 90%. It will always happen on the same planet, some are fine some I just don't even bother with any more. Here are my specs.

P4 2.8 GHZ
512 MB RAM
XP Home
ATI 9200 Video Card 164 MB.
SB Audigy 2

I have already lowered my DirextX acceleration on sound. Any other ideas?

First things first, have you installed the latest ATI and Creative drivers? Which version of DirectX do yuou have running? 9.0b is the latest.

My drivers are up to date. I am running DirectX 9.0b. Any other suggestions of what to try? Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Try disabling "AGP Fast Write". This can cause problems and lock-ups with some games.

I hate to sound stupid but where do I find that? Is it in dxdiag?

You don't sound stupid. Don't be so paranoid!

You can access it by right-clicking on the Desktop, and selecting "Properties". Go to the "Settings" tab, and then click on "Advanced", and then go to the "SMARTGART" tab. You can find it there. I know that you are probably familiar with this, but I thought I'd go through the rigamarole just in case.

Oh, and ATI have just released Catalyst 4.3; it might be worth a shot.
