GForce FX5200

The place to ask for technical help with running the demo or the full game...

GForce FX5200

Has anyone got the game running with an FX5200? I have just 'upgraded' from an MX400 and now the game regularly crashes. The monitor appears to go into stand-by mode (black screen, flashing LED) and all that can be done is for me to reach for the reset button. I have tried every version of the drivers I can find and it is always the same. Things worked fine on my MX400

XP Pro
1 Gig Ram
2.53Ghz P4
PNY FX5200
ABIT BH7 Motherboard

Any help would be *much* appreciated since Freelancer was the main reason for me buying the new card.

Using DirectX 9? 9a?

Might try(if you haven't already) uninstalling the drivers, then switching video to standard VGA, restart, re-install latest drivers.

Yes this was using DirectX9a, in order to be able to play the game I have resorted to installing my previous graphics card - not exactly an ideal solution since I have a new card now sitting in a cupboard. I would be VERY happy if someone came up with a way of making it work.

I also have the GForce FX 5200 Ultra and Freelancer won't run. And like you I just went and built a new computer so I can enjoy playing newer games.

This is my current setup, I considering getting a new MoBo.

Albatron KX 400 8X
AMD XP 2400+
Corsair XMS 3200C2 DDR 400
GForce FX 5200 Ultra AGP
98se

But the sad thing is it isn't going to happen with Freelancer.

Since Direct X9 is a microsoft product and it recognizes and says the Pny Gforce FX 5200 Ultra passes all the tests with flying colors one would think the next microsoft product might work too but no.

I have spent the last two days getting the "Latest Drivers" and completly exhausting every possibility that is listed on the microsoft support page with no luck.

Do you know what it is? The Drivers for the GFORCE FX 5200 ULTRA is not digitally signed by Microsoft and is therefore not a compatible product. Open Direct X, on the first page there is a check box "Check for WHQL digital Signatures" Check it and go to the display tab. The first line in the "notes" box says not digitally signed.

I am running 98se and according to microsoft digital signatures for 98 are no more and will only apply to ME, 2000 and XP. Even then the GForce FX 5200 and other Nvidia cards and many other brands of adapters are left in the dark because Microsoft says so.

The sad thing is freelancer runs on my AMD 400 Compaq Laptop.

Hey all, especially the last guy. Does this ring a bell.

Albatron KX400 8XV pro
512 unbranded.
PNY Ti4200.
SB Live!

I had similar problems. Where it would just randomly freeze requiring BRB only. Seemed no pattern to freezing. Might play for hour. Might play for 20 secs. I;ve been stable now for about 5 days, after probably 130 different things. If this sounds like you, post it here, and i'll try and relay the most probable cause(s).

SV1, i think that if drivers are not WHQL certified it does not necessarily mean they are incompatible, it just means that nVidida have not passed them over to microsoft for them to check them yet.

It might not be of any help whatsoever and i'm sorry if i'm being vague, but i read something somewhere that said somebody was having a problem with his monitor shutting off, and he had to unplug it from the card or something.................i don't really remember the details.......

GeForce 440 mx will work with its driver but a tab will come up saying you need to update the driver, just dont update the driver and it works great.....running home built 750 mhz AMD ( a hold over from a previous Abit mb home build)
100 Mhz FSB
Soyo Dragon Lite KT 333 MB
AOpen GeForce 440 mx 64meg
266 mhz non-ecc ddr (256meg)
onboard 4ch sound with Altec 5 Speaker Surround (the cheapy $42)
Windows ME
Viewsonic 22"..E220-2
NOTE: I should be running about a 1.4 ghz 266 FSB for peak performance with this mb but the 750 was looking at me sheepishly from the corner of my bench, hehe, It works fine but the heavy combat is a little laggy. The GeForce 440 mx is a sweet board, but, I might go with a 440 mx 128 meg ddr....a little more power, a little faster and pretty inexpensive right now.

I am running a Pentium 850 and a 32 meg gforce MX. I do have 512 ram.

The game runs fine, but when I loaded DirectX 9a, I also updated to the latest Nvidia drivers. I had all kinds of probloems not only with the game but even with text editors (I have a couple I use).

I finally went to the Nvidia site and got the previous generation of drivers. Problems resolved. Presto!! Problems resolved! There seems to be something funny about the latest drivers.

You're right the WHQL signed drivers don't really matter, I said it at the end of my first post but it was worded bad i guess.

I am running 98se and according to microsoft digital signatures for 98 are no more and will only apply to ME, 2000 and XP. Even then the GForce FX 5200 and other Nvidia cards and many other brands of adapters are left in the dark because Microsoft says so.

The point is my GeForce 5200 FX Ultra isn't on the games compatibility list. There is a file that says which cards are "allowed" to work. Look in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Freelancer\EXE for the file "flconfigdatabase.txt", Scroll down to the Nvidia section it's not on the list. I dont know it there's any way to edit this file or any other to include the 5200 but if there is and it works let me know.

The error I get is "Freelance does not recognize a 3D capable video card", if I lower the Hardware acceleration it tells me I might have to reboot or reinstall. Like I said I did every troubleshooting and I believe all of it to be invain. The 5200 runs every single game I've got except Freelancer. If this card isn't 3D capable I'm out $180.00, too bad because other than freelancer I'm lovin it.

I'm replacing my Albatron KX400 8X within a week or two. I'll let ya'll know if that helps.

im haveing same prob. it played fine with my g2 mx/mx 400 i uped to a g-4 ti4200 and get the dont recognize your 3d video card iv calld the game makers help line and dell suport and no help i can play my other games fine if you find any thing out post it here pleas!!! i dont want to half to swap out my cards every time i play f.l lol

Odd, try uninstalling your drivers and re-installing, although I suspect you may have already. If you just swapped the cards, it's possible that the Registry is trying to run the GF 4 MX. Due to differences in the cards it likely is causing conflicts.

That's just a guess.

I have an Asylum GF FX 5200 and so far i haven't got any probs, i am running with the most current drivers from nVidia, uninstalled the old ref drivers, rebooted, installed the latest Det 4's then reinstalled my AGP bus drivers.then Rebooted. then a fresh install of DX9a and rebooted. no problems here. i do however get a slight screen glitch as in a few 1-2millisecond lag when players or AI ships appear. still working on that. Also run a good defrag in safe mode ocoasionally i think this helped me a lot and game runs way more smoother. (more stuff gets fixed that way) due to not all of win XP's services/componets loading)

also on mine vid card manual it says to disable any kind of video bios cacheing and video Ram shadowing.

my setup is a bit dated but here it is

FIC AD-11
Athlon 1600+
512 DDR Ram
Soundblaster Live!!!!! 5.1
asylum GeForce 5200 128DDR
generic intel NIC
maxtore (up) 7500rpm 60 gig HD
ATI TV Wonder VE
some lite on cheepo CD-RW
350watt P/S
Win XP Pro SP 1
Bellsouth DSL 1.5down 256k up
Alcatel Speedtouch home
Netgear RP 614 router

Its not your GeForce FX 5200 that is the problem its the Universal Driver update that is the killer....the universal driver should also work in my 440 mx and it does not. It shreds my internet explorer and ICQ like confetti! someone at Nvidia blew it ! that same driver tromped threw my hard drive like it had combat boots on. my suspicion is that it required a change in a windows unprotected file that shifted a field somewhere. At anyrate I haven't done the right thing and emailed NVidia yet but maybe we all should.

a foot note........the game runs fine with the new driver but the machine takes a dive on all its peripheral tasks. Anything running in my tray can turn good deeds into a crash or an error sentence, even got blued a few times, and forget DVD....
