Possible fix for ni servers listed in multiplayer

Ok after installing directx9.0a update to may already installed directx9 I found I had no servers listed in the multiplayer listings and 'connecting to global server' was showing all the time at the top.

Ok this is a 'possible' fix that worked for me --

When u update directx 8.0 to 9.0 or 9 to 9.0a a small file should run once to register all the directx dll files to finish the upgrade, this file being called -- DXDLLREG.EXE - this is found in Win XP in (drive):/windows/system32.

When I first rebooted my pc this file was mistakenly opened by Quick View Plus and as far as I can figure out it crashed at starting and stopped the dxdllreg.exe program from completeing its registering of the files. I know this to be the case as when I ran dxdiag I had errors saying missing registry entries under the network tab for directx8 entries.
After I rebooted again and ran the dxdllreg.exe file I again ran dxdiag and found that all the entries under the network tab saying that entries were missing was now gona and all was saying ok.
As I say a possible fix for some of u may be to manually run this file found in - windows/system32 dir - just double click it and then look in dxdiag to see if the errors are corrected and even if not maybe try the game to see if servers are now showing in the listings.

After I did this and noting else low and behold I ran Freelancer and servers were again appearing in the multiplayer listings

Hope this helps some of u out there

A way you can check for a messed up DirectX install is to run DxDiag.exe and look at what it reports. I've seen a few where everything except DirectPlay9 got installed properly, causing all manner of problems.

MasCalaveras yeah exactly m8 - thats why I think that dxdllreg.exe file must run to complete the directx installation or update to register all the file changes so that games can see them.

Has this helped anyone or has anyone even tried it - would be nice to know I helped at least one or a few people

Thanks alot for the fix. But how did u mannaged to find out that the problems was due to dirextX not installed properly?
I had the same problem for a week without any answers till u came along.
Thanks again for the good work.
Hope to see more from ya.

May the Wolf be with you....

lo again,

Glad to have helped NeoWolf - difficult to describe how I came across it really

Erm basically I saw that the dxdllreg.exe file wanted to run at every startup until I let it run once - when the directx 9.0a update came out I noticed that my directx 8 entries in dxdiag were giving up as errors - so I thought maybe just maybe being as dxdllreg.exe is so named (dxdllreg as in registering the .dll files) I would try running that file again and see if the entries are fixed and damn they were
As soon as I ran dxdiag again all was ok in there so I proceeded to run the game and found servers listed in the main listings

Guess you can say just trial and error and luckily I found a fix quickly

Hope this helps more people as I know what it's like to get held back by a gaming bug.

I didn't werk for me....
in my dxdiag it say directx 9.0a but the network tab say 8.0 is this normal ?

No, your DirectPlay saying 8.0 is very bad. Try re-installing DX9 for kicks.

Thanks for the tip - I experienced the "Connecting to global server...." crap last night.

Then found through dxdiag that my DirectPlay settings were f00b4r.

Clicking on the DXDLLREG.EXE file did nada. I had to reinstall DX9.0a.

It works now though!
