Is there anyway that someone would be able to dock on a ship that is being flown. Even if it'll crash the server if the mothership blows up is there anyway?
maybe this would be worth looking into, does sound like it would work.

what about the orbiting planets trick? maybe this could be applied to ships using the hp child = bit, im just going on what i know works well and what could work well
i suppose a test so to speak would be to use to planets, make them destructible and see if both go boom, then a further test would be if the first one was a success, would be to add docking ring to one of them, make that invincible, then destroy the other planet as normal and see if a player that was pre-docked there, crashes a server.
integrating a dll would be sort of tricky as theirs all the CRC's etc to check.

One theory I've yet to test is a carrier class ship without a sur file.
But in this case, to "dock" with this particular ship...
you don't actually dock with it...but rather you enter formation with the ship instead. (a matter of adjusting the formation tolerances for only that ship so the fighters that go into formation with it acutally dissapear within the hull of the ship)
Perhaps this is where a "phantom_physics = true" would come in handy for a carrier that does have a sur file.
Even to take it as far as breaking it down to destructable sub-components where you have a specialized "docking bay" that is part of the carrier.
You could make the carrier exceptionally large so the fighters can form up with it well within it's hull.

I would hope that there would also be a way for the player flying the ship to deny access to players if he/she didn't eant certain people to dock there.
The only problem I see with the formation theory is that you wouldn't be able to nuy ships or equipment then.
It would also be an awesome idea to make a bar so you could do missions for whatever faction the player owning the ship was allied with.

Making a "base" player flyable is an impossibility for the present time being, I'm afraid to say.
But, given enough time for the bright minds that come an go through here, I am certain that even this will be figured out.
As far as denying anybody from docking (entering formation) with this concept, it's a simple matter of being allowed to "group" with the carrier.
Nobody can form up with another ship unless they're in a group.
(speaking of multiplayer)

not nessesarily flyable. and if someone suggested orbiting bases, i have been told it doesn't work. if you made docking ports in the stations orbit it would work. fascinating. although the ports would move as well... and you would dock in a random peice of space... disregard that.

moving (rotating) bases do work, but docking with them is problematic to say the least - undocking is easy enough though, and certainly not 'very hard' to accomplish
lancerlover - i can never make heads or tails from what you're saying; i certainly hope you never write any tutorials. and i wish a moderator would remove all your ugly sigs
