Well, in the pre-jumpgate days and before we discovered these jumphole anomalies that allow us to travel between sectors, we lost an awful lot of ships out off the borders, and no-one seemed to know why, other than hazarding guesses.
Then one day as I remember (I was just a wee brat then) some famous and old explorer came back from the brink of death with his ship in absolute tatters. He said he had chased after his partner who had gone crazy after a 3-day drinking bout and went... Out There... But he was sadly unable to save his friend, and darn near lost his own life too when his ship started breaking up.
Anyhow, he stood in front of the reporters at the space port recounting how he had tried in vain to stop his friend, and the cry of anguish he yelled out as his partner's ship finally disintegrated. I think it went something like "Darn and Tarnation! If I told youse once, I told youse a hundred times! DON'T go OUT That Far, ya Varmint!".
Then he turned to the camera fully, and I remember (and heed) his last words to this day:-
"And the same goes for all YOU Varmints Out There too!!"
I remember it caused quite a stir at the time.
