Cutting out parts of zones on the navmap?

Cutting out parts of zones on the navmap?

Question: Is it possible to cut out some areas of an asteroid field shown on the navmap? For instance for an asteroid belt, I only need the ring, not the entire circle. Up to now, I solved this by putting ellipsoid zones around were the ring is to be, but this is somewhat inaccurate.

Is there a better way? I already tried putting a zone with no navmap occurrence over the middle of the zone, but this only darkened the middle part of the zone, not made it disappear entirely.

Not totally sure, but try looking at the asteroids/bw04_.. fields for the lavafield around the star. That one has the layers.
Or, you could try giving it the yanagi debrisfield property flag. It is just plain black.

Well, if you want only the asteroids to be in a ring, you could put an exclusion zone in the asteroid field, although it's been a while since I messed with those... Maybe somebody else could help you with making it, but I am pretty sure that an exclusion zone will do the trick.

I think you need a little bit more than that. You exclude the zone then add an entry to exclude the property flag as well.

I am not really sure, but you can try adding <pre><font size=1 face=Courier>property_flags = 131072 </font></pre> to the exclusion zone.

Also, there's the sort parameter (<pre><font size=1 face=Courier>sort = 60 </font></pre>, <pre><font size=1 face=Courier>sort = 99.50000 </font></pre> etc.) I think this is some sort of layering order for the navmap, but I never really bothered to check out if it actually is. If it is indeed, then I wouldn't know what is shown on top: the highest or the lowest number...

Let us know if this works or not, or what else you did to get it like you want it!

Right. You could try looking at the exclusion zone in St01, Omicron Minor. I know that one works.

@Xen()morph: Isn't the NavMap blocked in all those St systems? (MG's Q is about getting a ring shape on the NavMap, not how to get an exclusion zone working in the actual star system)

Post Mon Jun 26, 2006 11:43 am

i think its st01 but around the order base "toledo"? the zone is excluded. thats what hes talking about

Post Mon Jun 26, 2006 6:02 pm

As far as I know Omicron Minor isn't blocked if you're in the system...Unless I changed something ages ago that I forgot about...

@Xen()morph: you are right, it is visible on the NacMap. My mistake (in some of these St systems you get a "no NavMap available" message).

Also you are right about the exclusion zone being nicely cut out from the asteroid field and nebula. SO it's either
<pre><font size=1 face=Courier>property_flags = 131072 </font></pre>
or
<pre><font size=1 face=Courier>property_flags = 65536
property_fog_color = 40.000000, 85.000000, 70.000000
edge_fraction = 0.200000 </font></pre>

(or both) what he should try.

Okay, first of all, I'd like to thank you for your help.

I haven't tried out any of your methods up to now, since I just came home and read this.

Adding property_flags = 131072 was of course the first thing I did. No luck here.

There was this idea of the sort entries being some kind of layering. Well, the Van Rohe Belt in Omega-11, which was used as an example, has "sort = 13" while the exclusion, which is the sun death zone at the same time, has "sort = 99". Obviously, the exclusion zone is on top of the belt zone. Yet when looking at this nav map screenshot, you will find the inner part of the belt as I described my previous attempts to use an exlcusion zone, namely the middle part being darker yet still there.

As for this whole Omicron Minor discussion, I've lost you. What exactly is your proposal here?

In Omicron Minor there is an exclusion zone in the middle of the asteroid field, where planet Toledo is located. I allows you to have no asteroids or nebula junk within that zone, so that the area around toledo is suitable for the anti-nomad battleship part of the campaign. I suggested that to get an asteroid belt, you could make a large field with a large exclusion zone inside it.

There are two ways to go about this:

1. Use more than one exclusion. I used 4 or 5, and it eliminated the middle. It still looks wierd, however...

2. Find out how to use shape = RING. For some bloody reason, if you put the shape of the field into a ring, like it is on planatary rings, it doesn't show up on the navmap at all. If you can find a way around this, let me know, as I'd like to use it too.

When using a ring, unless I used an exclusion zone, I could not get the asteroids from showing up in the middle part. But I think the ring showed up on the navmap simply as a circle, so without the hole in it. Which is the opposite of what you reportedly achieved, but nevetheless wrong.

I remember a while back when I was messing with zones, I had a similar problem with the zones appearing strangely on the navmap, as I recall, the problem was visit. If you add visit = 128, I believe it will make the zone disappear on the navmap, and if it is 0, it will be very dark. the other numbers increase the zone's 'opacity' on the navmap.

if this is wrong please tell me, but I believe this is the case...
