I would have thought that externally hosted images would be a better solution, simply because of the sheer amount of disk space that will be taken up? Maybe upload the thumbnail to FLR and then a link to the externally hosted main image. Or even better upload the url of a thumbnail and the url of the main image. The thumbnails of course would have to be of fixed dimensions and file size or else neither would work.
I seem to remember this being talked about previously and the topic of disc space was always a major issue.
as an afterthought - you could actually do this with just a well admin-managed stickie - think about it - run a stickie that people could upload thumbnails to....define in the title message that they have to be of fixed dimensions and size....then get people to simply post their thumbnails (externally hosted of course) and a link to the main piccie. Makes sense to me, and is a lot less hassle for the admin, all they have to do is check that no idiot throws in a main image instead of a thumbnail.
